Using Dogs to Track Wounded Deer

You make it sound like if this were legal, every deer hunter out there is suddenly going to start attempting 00 yard archery shots or winging lead at running deer... sort of like they already do... What was your argument again?

Using Dogs to Track Wounded Deer

I may or may not have tagged it, and I may or may not have actually shot it first. Couldn't find it. Thought, "well dang, I guess I'll go bird hunting." And wouldn't you know it: Not a single sharptailed grouse in those oak bottoms but we did find a deer! Ha! I'd rather be lucky than good any day.

Using Dogs to Track Wounded Deer

I've NEVER used my wirehairs to track a wounded deer! It's ILLEGAL. What I HAVE done is gotten my dogs, grabbed a shotgun and gone bird hunting with them, and just happened along a blood trail, and subsequently stumbled upon a dead deer. PURE COINCIDENCE.

    Pointers

Yes, you can set it to point mode and then the remote will either beep or vibrate when a dog is on point.

    Coyotes

I have yet to see a coyote this fall, but I hunt the east side. I guess all them mutts are further west.

    Pointers

I don't like beeper collars, personally. I used to run bells, but in the wind around here those are next to useless. Now I have a SportDOG Tek 2.0 GPS collar. I tried that and the Garmin Alpha, and I prefer the SportDOG. I know exactly where both my dogs are at all times, which is critical in...

    Deer hunting around Finley, Cooperstown

It gets posted up thicker than frog spit about a week out from deer opener. It's also a tough unit to get a deer tag for. Then again, what isn't??

    Pointers

I let my dogs get loosey goosey in the fall. They're both trained steady through wing, shot and fall, but when it's hunting season I let the bust at the shot. I also have both dogs trained to break on command, so in the thick stuff they'll flush a pinned pheasant if I can't get to them. It's the...

    Weird food combinations that work

My mom always made bologna, ketchup and potato chip sandwiches when I was young. I added pickles to the mix. Still one of my favorite combos.

    Pheasant opener 2017

I went against my own advice and walked a bit Friday for pheasants after getting a limit of ducks in the morning. Between the heat, 40-mph wind gusts and blizzard of cattail fuzz, we should have just gone home. Good news is the corn is coming down. That should help, along with cold temps.

    Hunting Clothing

What's your definition and price point that constitutes "quality" versus "cheap?" Honest question, because as this thread has gone on, I feel like it varies quite significantly from person to person.

    Hay Creek Dispute

"Alton Nitschke and his wife, Arlene, who are concerned about the quality and quantity of water that will be discharged onto their land, are appealing a permit that the Burleigh County Water Resource District granted to itself for a drainage project meant to remove excessive groundwater from the...

    Snows

I hear ya. Buddy sent me a pic of a stack of snows, Canadas and mallards with the words "game on." This was last weekend. I'm not sure where he was, but it was north of DL a ways.

    Dog Boxes/Hunting Crates

I have two Rough Tuff Kennels. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. I've bought enough cheap crates that crack/split/disintegrate I'd had enough. Plus I worry about the dogs. I know it won't stop them from getting killed in an accident, but I feel a bit better after watching the torture test...

    Snows

Heard they're stacking up just south of the Canadian border. Lots of huntable numbers at the moment. I'm sure the leading edge will keep pushing when the corn comes off. Otherwise we'll have to wait for some cold temps.

    Hunting Clothing

I hear ya Lungdeflator, and I agree! I think where I might differ is the degree of quality and price. Even if you found Sitka at half price, it's still more than double what you're talking about. At least from what I've seen.

    Hunting Clothing

What the heck are you guys doing to your coolers to make them bust in a season?? I have a Coleman that I won in 2002 during my senior graduation night and it still has all it's pieces and still keeps things relatively cold. Thing couldn't have cost more than $20 at the time. Hey, if you guys...

    Hunting Clothing

Hey, some guys get by with Coleman coolers to chill their Blue Num Nums, others need to spend $500 on a Yeti. I guess, personally, I'd rather buy myself a new shotgun with what I have leftover after getting a "garbage" set of hunting clothes, versus spending everything on high-end clothing. ;)
