    Anyone Tie Flies?

I haven't tied any pike flies yet. If I knew a lake with a good population of hammer handles I'd give my 6 weight a test. Had a lake years ago loaded with them, man would that have been a riot on a fly rod! I just started tying trout flies this winter. Started simple zebra midges and such...

New Land Bills: SB 2036, 2037 and 2038

What's with the hard on for "electronic" posting? Are other states doing this? I haven't heard of it until ND started playing with it, though I have not looked into it. Though apps like OnX work well, there are still huge data gaps within the GIS data sets. Some counties in SD still don't...

    Odd weather

Sounds like Hwy 12 is closed to Hettinger and 73 to Summerville. They're saying everyone south and east of Lemmon prepare to evacuate. Town is fine according to what I read on FB. Some pretty wild pictures out there, just glowing to the west/northwest. How fast can a prairie fire burn in 50...

    Odd weather

Yes the big winds are going to pooch things up pretty good for anything with marginal ice or any open water. But, it sounds like winter is coming next week, significant pattern shift to more of the La Nina pattern they expected. We've made it this long into winter with nice weather, I won't...

    Does anyone here target carp?

Other than a leech mentioned, any good fly patterns to tie for carp? I just started tying and enjoy the few minutes a night tying up a fly or two.

south dakota pheasant season extended to jan 31

Hunted yesterday, the wet and weird weather had the birds scattered here and there. Had a good hunt but lots of miles put on. Incredible weather for January....can't think that you can experience days like that too often that month in this country. The January opportunity is nice but I could...

    Does anyone here target carp?

Never tried braid, but with big pike flies I think I would still lean on fluoro. I've never done well casting heavier flies on light line. Streamers and such seem to cast better for me with line that has more stiffness. I'm not sure I'd worry about the visibility of braid like some might say...

south dakota pheasant season extended to jan 31

Send Kristi an email with the idea. I'm sure she'd try to sell that out too. Our legislative session starts here, I'm sure it will come up!

south dakota pheasant season extended to jan 31

I agree that if you're hunting Idaho it's not a good comparison. I know when I plan my OOS elk adventures I'm looking for solid populations and avoid areas that have predator issues. But I don't hunt Idaho. But, the point simply is that if you're paying for a license, folks should have the...

south dakota pheasant season extended to jan 31

I can agree with the fact that if the weather is crappy folks wouldn't hunt. And I do agree that providing hunting opportunities is important. However, it cannot be argued that our hunting and fishing policies are now more economically driven than scientifically based. The great Gov. Noem has...

    New Private Habitat Plots

The PF site says $50/acre annual payment to the landowner? On marginal ground that is fair money. We may look into it in some small plots. The pollinator plots are generally the best brood cover you can get for young chicks.

    Does anyone here target carp?

Good thread. We've got a couple lakes here with lots of them. I have always been told it is the bonefishing of the Dakota's. Very challenging to say the least. I may have to take the 6 weight out and give it a go. Just started tying flies and see there are some fun carp patterns to look at...

Technology in the outdoors- where is the line?

In some ways technology in fishing can be compared to shooting long range. You have to know your equipment, practice with it, and then be able to execute to use the high end electronics. And to make a long range rifle shot. I personally have no issue with a guy who can shoot a deer at 1000...

Technology in the outdoors- where is the line?

https://www.gohunt.com/read/news/update-on-potential-arizona-trail-camera-ban#gs.oostkr I recently read this article about AZ possibly banning trail cameras. Much of it surrounds camera use around man made water sources. Limited water means pretty easy locations to scout. Some have compared...

How to preserve hunting when all land is posted

As I've stated before, I see both sides of it being from SD. Here is my take on a few of the ideas- -You still need to provide a landowner opportunity to get a tag. Maybe it isn't free, but they must basically get a guaranteed license in the draw for their unit. It should be good on their...

I got wood! Need custom stock built

I would check with Boyd's to see if they will do it off of a customer supplied blank. Like others have said, you're going to need a serious drying effort to get it ready. I'd cut about 6 rough slabs and find somone with a kiln to dry it down. Take the least nasty one after drying, plane and...

Gun Safe Listed Capacity vs. Actual?

I think I am going to heed the advice and get a smaller one to start. If I want to add another I will. Seems counterintuitive, but I HATE moving the things. I've moved my friend's 4 times and each time I say never again. The shotgun part is a good point, I have several long trap guns. Shelf...

    DIY liquid propane transfer

I think I paid around $11 last time at our local Cenex. Convenience would be the major factor if you go thru a lot. I only burn up about 4 20# per year for cooking along with a couple more for camping/fishing. But I don't live in the great white north either!

Gun Safe Listed Capacity vs. Actual?

Going to be buying a safe here soon. I've heard people say buy twice what you think you'll need. So if I want to fit 15, do I buy a 30, 10 buy 20, 20 buy, 40? Far fewer scoped guns than shotguns in what I have if that makes any difference. I plan to go look some over soon, just curious on...

    SB 2315 / Lockout

I agree. The "sportsmen" treated these lakes and the land around them as if they were their own public playground with no consideration for landowners. All it took was a few of the wrong ones with connections and/or money and here we are. There should be better tax relief for flooded lands in...
