    Spoons, again...

We all have our moments. Truth be told, I'd say that while I've had a couple days with solid weights, the ease at which the kids put up the numbers of good fish yesterday made it by far my/our best outing of the year so far.

    Spoons, again...

Thanks everyone, it really was a fantastic afternoon on the shoreline! The kids were super excited with how it all played out, and I was even more pleased. Here's another pic of the bucket of fish: - - - Updated - - - note, that my fish are included in the bucket as well.

    Spoons, again...

So the kids and I were going walleye fishing yesterday afternoon and as we hit the ramp I noticed a thunderstorm bearing down on us from about 45 minutes out (get a weather app with radar, it's great!). So not wanting to get caught on the water just minutes after putting in the boat, I decided...

    Stizo :)

WW, I was thinking the same thing...about the unusual launching technique. I believe it may have been at Pouch's Point. Anyway, while we've never met, I learned many things from Stizo through that old website and am glad he found us.

    Amazing!!

Yep, they taste the same as a 14 inch fish...because they are the same. The only thing you should be able to notice is that the texture is a little coarser (bigger flakes). And, of course, the bigger they get...the more they start tasting like a thermometer.

    Van Hook — maiden voyage

If you can't find fish this time of year at Van Hook, you need to sell your boat. They will literally be off of every point, submerged island, and most flats out there. Finding the technique that works best for you and your setup (boat, speed, etc) is the bigger challenge, just know that they...

    Reels

I used to love Shimano reels, then I seemed to develop bail issues with them, one by one. I've since gone the way of Pflueger, they really do feel different than the Shimano reels I once loved, but thus far they have been problem free. Someone up above also noted the "buy cheap and replace as...

    ND ELK tag auction

I paid $20 for mine back in 2005, so with this rate of inflation it'll only be Bezos and Buffet getting tags next year.

    Slip Bobber on Sak?

I've thought the same thing. Biggest difference though is that on Devils Lake I'd always use slip bobbers up in the trees, not quite the same shoreline along most of Sak even though I am pretty sure that if you found them concentrated off a point you'd be able to anchor up and go after them. -...

    Trolling with Spoons

I grew up on Sak and we used spoons and Lazy Ikes a lot back in the 70s and 80s, like right before the bottom bouncer came around. The biggest problem with them is they twisted the hell out of your line, second biggest issue was the number of goldeyes that also hit them. Can you catch eyes...

    Montana poacher banned for life

Personally, I feel sorry for the schmuck. He made some very bad decisions and will forever be judged by them regardless of whatever else he may have been doing right in his life. This is exactly the kind of stuff I like to show my kids. It would seem that no matter what other good you may do...

    MPG towing the boat

FWIW, my 4Runner that rarely pulls is averaging 16.9 mpg with a man behind the wheel. Yeah, I'm rarely left in the dust when the light turns green, but that's not market average at all for a vehicle of that size. It will get 20.5 on the highway at something slightly above recommended speed...

    MPG towing the boat

I've used my 4Runner for pulling my 1750 Lund, which is probably just over 3k loaded on the trailer. Granted, while my primary boat tow rig is an F250 and I can forget the boat is even behind it on long trips, the few times I've used the Toyota to tow the boat I thought it was a little light...

    Montana poacher banned for life

I don't know him, but I bet there are those that do and really like(d) him even though their own conscience forces them to now ask "what the hell were you thinking". People that embrace bad decisions walk among us on a daily basis. Yet we don't dislike them until they are caught. Personally...
