    Are they being aerated during transport? How long has the holding tank been set up? Does it have a filter? Is the water temp relatively similar when they are moved from bucket to tank and tank to bucket? These are very durable baitfish, we just need to figure out what youre doing wrong.

    I swore last year never to use store bought smelt for anything but channel cats, but I ran out of fresh ones this year after a weekend of slaying pike. the next weekend with store bought smelt I caught one pike and missed one bite all day.

    I would rather use a 3" locally caught and properly frozen smelt than a 12" free one from the grocery store. smelt caught in the tailrace or in sakakawea that are frozen right away outfish store bought smelt 10 to 1. the smell better and don't fall apart when the thaw out, they even look better.

    HAHAHAHA....that's awesome. I did this once before with some friends, only I used channel cat...same results. we didn't get as in depth, I just said it was walleye until everyone was done eating.

    My brother outfitted a blowgun with a fishing reel and rod tip, then modified some darts with barbs and line attached. Hed shoot fish and rel em in. It was pretty fun.
