Can't talk you out of it lycan. Sorry! 22 mag has it's uses. When a 22lr just isn't quite enough, the 12 ga covers too much target real estate, and a 223 isn't really the safest option. Taking care of a big raccoon as an example is where the 22 mag fits in. Tree stripping/girdling rabbits at 75 yards is another. It's a fun little caliber. Good Luck!!

22Mag is a fantastic choice to have in the Rod Locker of your boat, a summertime plinker, and/or anytime a person might come across a <200yd fox or smaller furbearer you'd like to for sure be able to save the hide. From a bolt action IMO/IME the 22Mag feeds a lot smoother and more reliably than an HMR. Those Ruger rotary mags in 22Mag are as close to feed/function perfection as one can have from a detachable mag 22Mag IMO/IME.

.17HMR is similar but really gets it's arse kicked in the wind, is much MORE explosive on small rodents, and is more dependent on proper placement to get into the vitals of larger vermin like a full-sized raccoon, badger, or skunk. Fox are fairly thin-skinned vs. a raccoon, skunk, or badger and the HMR <200yds wouldn't make me feel underpinned @ all.

The B&T Tiger shush's the 22Mag and the HMR down to nothing but the supersonic woosh of air quite well. I've been very pleasantly surprised how much the HMR is moderated by the 'Tiger.

I'd opt 4" or less S&W 422 and CCI UpperCut ammo. The 'Smith is likely a similar weight to that derringer and allows for much better grip and sight alignment. Trail-Runners are most likely wearing a fanny pack anyway so stuff the 'Smith in there.....

I've owned a Marlin 783 tube-fed 22 WMR for about 50 years! Used it for hunting beaver, fox, prairie dogs, gophers, and much more with complete satifaction!
That 783 is super accurate, and the cartridge really kills well! I'm a happy shooter!!

Same here and it still puts them in the 10 ring at 75 yards. LB

I won a Heritage 22lr at a coyote contest years back. I put the mag cylinder on it and it's probably one of my favorite guns to shoot.
