24v trolling motor batteries.

Bought a new boat last week, first time owning a 24v trolling motor.

It has one battery under each of the counsles, the cables run thru the front of the boat and pretty much unaccessible without tearing into stuff.

The battery on the passenger side is red - positive black negative...

The battery on the driver's side is red to possitive and black to negitive as well

Only difference is the red cable on the driver's side has a blue stripe on it.... Do you think they crossed the wires up front in the bow??

Just curious how a 24v system is actually supposed to be wired it.... The trolling motor and everything works fine so It must be wired in correctly just thought it was supposed to be positive to negitive negitive to possitive or something like that.

To make it a 24 volt system, the wire connecting the two batteries to each other will go from one batteries positive to one batteries negative.

Get a digital electrical meter and check voltage and polarity before you hook them to the trolling motor. Then mark your wires with black and red tape to minimize the chase of cross connection. Some trolling motors have protection against this but don't chance it. This web site is pretty easy to follow.

If it aint broke don't try to fix it. Just remember to hook up new battries exactly the same way as it is or your going to fry something.

It can also depend on the type of plug it uses. The marinco plug and socket has the jumper built into the socket. Both of the battery’s have black on negative and red on positive. There is four wires running up to the socket.

I so hated the Marinco plugs. Was getting connection dropouts etc.

I switched to Minnkota’s “forklift” style and love them.

I wanted a simple two wire connector for the new 36 V Ulterra I mounted up last year. Went with this style with 8 Guage pigtails.

Talked with River City in Bismarck and he told me on the Sylvan models everything is done up front in the bow which makes sense. I have nothing but praise for River City they've been awesome to deal with on this boat and answered all my questions and then some! Guess I should have just called them first haha!

You have no idea what a great buy you made. The hours spent in that boat with your little buddy will help shape him into a great young man. My kids are in their 40's and we still hunt and fish together as well as my grandkids.
