One fish, two fish: Grand Forks angler catches a couple


Lucas Bye of Grand Forks caught two fish at once Nov. 5 when he landed this 17-inch walleye and 36-inch northern pike on Stump Lake.

“Took me couple minutes to get the fish up to the surface,” he said.

“I figured with the way it burned the line that I just had a northern on. But when he surfaced and took a turn to dive again we could see a walleye in his mouth, and my jig was set in the walleye, and the pike had latched onto him and would not let go.

"When the pike dove the second time, I figured he was going to spit the walleye out for sure but he never did.He surfaced again and Shane Grotte got a good net on both of them just as shown in the picture.” Bye kept the walleye and released the pike.

I had this happen this summer on Devils Lake with pretty much the same sized fish.

I was reeling up about a 17" walleye. When it got to the boat a pike grabbed it right by the head. Then my buddy and I were like holy crap and grabbed a camera. Then the pike continue to keep eating it and swallowing it. Right at the boat! He ate the whole damn thing. Craziest thing I've ever seen. I just texted him to see if he still has pic on his phone.

My dad had this happen on Stump awhile back. Walleye was about a 14" or so and the pike couldn't have been much more than 24". Not sure how he was planning to eat that walleye.

Happened to me twice this summer at DL. While shore fishing, a 30 inch northern latched onto a 12 inch walleye and we landed both. While boat fishing, had about a 14 inch walleye get slammed by a huge fish. It took about 3 or 4 runs then got off. I wish I could have at least seen it as it fought a lot harder than the 6-8 pounders we had caught that day.

I was shore fishing one time and had a big fish on. It peeled a bunch of line, going left and right like crazy. About time I was getting it close to shore, it came off, and I reeled in a 14" walleye scared up pretty bad.

That sumabitch in that pic still wouldn't let go for the picture.

I found the pic. Like I said the northern originally bit the walleye by the head and then just kept swallowing. I caught the walleye on a crank. In the end I pulled in the pike cause the crank popped out of walleyes mouth and hooked the northern right on the mouth. Was neat

Not real. Pike only eat soft-finned fish like suckers.

We had a 6 inch walleye get ate by a 28-29" walleye fishing the knife river as kids, and up at tobin we never did land the walleye but I am guessing he was over 30+ inches grabbed a 19 inch walleye, had him up to the boat twice before he finally let go of the other walleye. On sakakawea multiple crank hooked saugers have fell victims to giant gators.

I have had them grab ahold but never long enough to get in the net.

Over the years I have seen it happen to a buddy of mine three times. On the third I was saying I would like to experience it sometime and within five minutes my six year old is screaming FISH ON WHAT DO I DO? I said reel then realized he had about a 15 pound pike on his walleye and he was just trying to hold on. We got it but it let go of the walleye in the net before the photo.

Now being a bit jealous and whiney, the next weekend my buddies daughter had it happen and finally about an hour later I got my shot. Been happening a lot lately in Devils Lake.

I found a honey hole about 7 years ago on DL where the walleyes didn't leave one small area all summer, Would catch a northern here and there but must have moved in thick one weekend because I had 3 grab and holds up to the boat in one day. Another fun Northern story, On the way to fishing spot last summer I threw a line out and trolled under the same bridge many times and There was a stationary northern that bit me off 5 or 6 times . One day I put on a huge novelty MN twins double spinner blade about 6'' or better, Biggest hook I have ever put on a line, Same spot he hit it that thing and an so hard that I was scared my rod was going break . Ended up being about 12 - 15 pounds. I filleted the SOB but I didn't think to look for hooks .
