I got careless with my charging station and left a bank of rechargeable AA batteries plugged in for the weekend while we were away and came home to a house that reeked of wood smoke. My charging station is wood and one bad battery got really hot and melted the battery holder and burned into the wood but luckily it didn't ignite. I had been warned about battery fires online and always thought they must have been using chargers that weren't compatible and sort of blew it off. Everything I had was compatible so it's a real thing. Just a warning , it really does happen.

Good thing your home was still standing when you arrived. Easy to forget about the chargers, have left Dewalt batteries on there for extended periods of time. Could bite me in the hinder one of these times.

Yea , we got lucky. It was cooled off when we got home so the short circuit must have melted but it had been mighty hot. One of those things ya think will never happen to you.

not the same but quite a few years ago my wife had a glass wind chime on the south side of our house. didnt notice when it fell on the deck. walking by one day smelled smoke. the glass was acting like a magnifying glass, had burnt a 4 inch hole in my deck. lucky it wasn't windy;

Makes a guy wonder how many wildfires are caused by glass, the old timers told about when all they had to bring water to the field was glass jars and jugs and how they had to make sure they were covered or in the shade because the water and glass would ignite fires.
