I'm starting to learn this river fishing thing a little bit and what I'm gathering is that you have to stay pretty vertical while jigging. How I currently do it is match my trolling motor pointed up stream to where I'm just slowly drifting backwards. Using anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 oz jigs usually depending on depth and wind. Sometimes this works, sometimes not. Is there a better technique? 1990ish Skeeter, 75hp tiller Merc and 80lb thrust Minnkota Powerdrive with iPilot for reference.

I would imagine the current might be a little stronger right now too.

Ghost, after master the Vertical and you want to fish different depth try slipping. that is turning you trolling motor head slightly to cover deeper or shallower water as you drift and slipping the current a little side to side staying vertical. you will be facing into the current when doing this. it can come in handy at times.

What type of retrieve works best on pitching jigs

Like what your already doing, soon as ya pick one up check the speed and depth, as wind changes you can usually replicate the situation and stack em, watching my speed once I got the gps a few years back made a world of difference

About 98% of the time I anchor and cast a 1/4oz jig at a 90dregee angle from the boat and let the current take it back behind the boat and then jig it back towards the boat until you can't feel bottom any more. On the down drift make sure you keep your line tight in case you get a pickup while the current is taking it back behind the boat.
