I have had my eye on hunting the Bob Marshall Wilderness for years -- an elk horseback hunt. My wife's grandpa went on an elk horseback hunt several decades back. They got to a point where the was a cliff with a single trail. Only one caravan of horses could walk this. They were on their way into the wilderness and another group was on their way out. So they waited for the caravan to pass on that single trail first. They asked how they did...they saw several elk racks on the back of horses. The hunters explained that one guy had been killed and tore all to hell by a Grizzly and they had to haul the remaining pieces of him in game bags.

Another story I heard was a guy shot an elk and the guide had them hang most of the pieces in a tree, but did something with one of the quarters. Like left it on the ground on purpose. I think the plan was to give the bear something easy so he only takes part of the elk and not the whole darn thing. I guess when they got back to the elk there was a massive grizzly there and they had to kill it or just did kill it. Not sure what the laws are on killing grizzly, but the killed it.

So, anyone else hunted there or have any interesting stories?

It's been a while since I've been to the Bob, but it sure is beautiful there. Berry season is nice. Hiked for about 5 days, and rafter a couple on the middle fork of the Flathead River. Water was cold. So clear that it looked like our raft was flying. Could see trout about 5 ft down in spots, and they were like in an aquarium.

I've went to "The Bob" 5 times in the last 15 years. Rode in at swift damn trail head and rode about 15 miles back in an set up camp. There are some breath taking views on the way to camp. The first couple times we want had marginal success with elk harvest, but brought home some monster mule deer. Saw a few grizzes on the first trip and more and more bears and sign as the years went on. The last time I went was 8 years ago and never saw any elk or deer sign. But the bear and wolve sign was everywhere. It's not a cheep trip. We took 3 pickups and trailers with 5 riding horses and 9 pack mules. We also rode the pack mules to give the horses a break. Packing in feed for the critters is the worst. There is very little grass for them to eat. It was fun and a lot of work Got to see country that most people only see in pictures. If you are looking for adventure it's a great trip. If you are looking to fill a tag. Go somewhere else. The wolves and bears have made a huge dent in the population.

Been 25 years sence been in the Bob. At that time we packed in on foot from a Gibson dam about 5 miles. Saw more cats then elk and had a slight run in with a griz. Didn't harvest any elk but was an interesting trip to say the least. Wonderful country. If we would have had horses it could have been a different story.

A fella from up in this neck of the woods was killed in the Bob Marshall I beleive when a falling rock knocked his horse off a trail like what was described 30 or 40 years ago.
