ACK for Whales board member Amy Everett DiSibio criticized the federal government’s focus on meeting wind energy targets at the expense of properly studying the potential consequences, which has already resulted in "transformation of an important area for marine life into a construction zone for just the very first power plants."
What a shame that everything turns political. Direct or indirect everything we do has consequences. Those who are opposed to offshore drilling say it's disruptive which it no doubt is. However I am sure one oil well will produce the energy of hundreds of wind turbines, and they need not be replaced so often. The turbine sure are an eyesore around North Dakota.
Many years ago a communication tower was built in the James River Valley near LazMoure, North Dakota. Scientist were concerned about all the cables spanning a major bird migration corridor. When first inspected it looked like no problem, but when nets were placed under the structure it revealed thousands of strikes were happening. Animals were eating the birds that fell removing the evidence. People observed this at North America's largest white pelican nesting collony north of Medina, North Dakota when coyotes were grabbing pelicans that struck power lines.
To say the wind turbines are destructive to whales should be unbiased in consideration. We do many things without knowing consequences. Still there are some things we have to do. We can't sacrifice a civilization for a Robin or a whale. Thanks for the stimulation to seriouse discussion.
As for California fires we should not fear considering all possibilities. Simply because we are honest and sane is not evidence that the entire human population is. Of course we all know that, but at times we forget how sick some minds are. I'm sure some hyper partisan will take advantage of my humor when I propose salt water induces insanity in humans. I offer the coastal states as evidence to such.
