I stumbled across these two guys camping down by the Fort in Abercrombie this morning. They are on Day 9 of what they hope is a 69 day canoe trip. Couple damned nice kids with a homemade canoe and a lot of ambition.....hope they can get through the physical and mental challenges ahead of them!

I've read the book Canoeing with the Cree. I hope they can endure the weather changes. More so there is a huge difference in people attitude towards random people camping on their property.

Would be curious to know what they actually planned for food and places to camp.

Looks awesome, except for paddling along the east shore of big windy:;:help. doing something like this or the Missouri river system would be awesome. Or one of the triple crown of hiking. Sometimes wish i would have taken a year after college and did something. Nope i started work the very next week, and now 10 years slipped by.

I did question them about Lake Winnipeg........they said their plan was to go up the west side. I wish I would have asked the reasoning as far as if it was prevailing winds or possibly if it was the way Sevareid and his partner took or what??

i would guess its just a matter of it being a shorter route and being able to hug the shore and beach it if necessary. the east shoreline is much more linear. if you tried to run the west shoreline, you would have a lot of meandering or else you would have to spend a lot of time a long ways from shore... which is not preferable in a canoe of course.

huh? so, they are going to hug the west shore?

On their route map, it shows the line down the east shore.

I hope they got a good plan to go around the low head at Drayton.

Very ambitious plan and I wish them Godspeed. Dragging a canoe around dams on the slick quicksand mud and paddling across 200+ miles of Lake Winnipeg would be my least favorite part.

Good catch and I may have to concede that my hearing does suck at times.....at least that's what my wife always tells me

Just did a rough estimate and from the narrows the west shore rout even with a couple substantial open water crossing is over 300 miles vs 150 for east shore. Surprised they don't just jump it since it appears they leapfroged the reservoirs down on the SD MN border already.

Would guess you heard that correctly since they appear to start on the west side then cross to the east at the narrows.

TTT. One of the neatest expeditions in years. They should have fished the whole way, though.

Interesting adventure, could get pretty sketchy once they get up into manitoba, once you get north of lake winnipeg, civilization ends and they still have a long way to go from there. Can't get dairy queen or pizza ranch anymore, cell service and charging devices out of the question as well.

My only beef with it would be the GoFundMe stuff they set up, seems that anybody can set up one of them to get donations for stuff- and people are stupid enough to donate which further encourages people to set up accounts. WTF. If you want to go on a trip, pay for the dam thing yourself or don't go. ;:;rant

Looks like a couple chicks did the same thing back in 2011, only all the way from Minneapolis. It appears failure would be pretty tough following that, ha ha.

I see their track shows they are north of Mentor right now. Maybe they gave up already?

At least this GoFundMe account is happening. I was looking at some and seen some local teenage girls that had accounts to go help with relief efforts from hurricane sandy. Pretty sure they didn't go. Wonder if they returned the 500 bucks?

Looks like they have Lake Winnipeg behind them and are off into the wilderness. Just grabbed a burger and went down by the river where they camped here in Abercrombie. Beautiful day to enjoy lunch down there.

As far as the comment on the gofundme account............I have no clue if these kids come from wealth or are just flying into it, but I don't feel one bit guilty or "stupid" for throwing a couple bucks their way. If it helps treats them to a polar bear tour or something at the end of the trip..........hell yeah!!

I see they are off the river again for some reason. Assuming there must be something off that side river where they are heading.

It appears the route they are taking somehow gets them to God's lake, then the God's River, and then the Hayes into Hudson. That's apparently what that Severeid did?????
