Depending what your accommodations and needs are, Declaw might be ok if you want is a house cat that stays inside 24/7 . The declawed one we had did just that. He didn't like it outside especially when it was cold out. It never went out when there was snow on the ground. On the farm I want a cat that will go in and around or under the buildings . "Knucklehead" is fun to watch when I let him out , He will stand on the steps and throw his nose in the air and smell for a while then he will sometimes jump up on the brick ledge and sit in a window planter till he think it smells safe then he goes goes for a walk around the yard and will usually bring home a rodent of some type and play with it for sport then either leave it or eat it.

How well do those claw caps work? Do they last long? I gave in to getting a cat with the stipulation that it stays an indoor cat and gets declawed, so she goes and adopts a 3yr old cat only to find out they can't be declawed once they're adults. So, the current options are continue to trim the things nails once a week or to do those claw cap things.
Claw caps work great and prevent damage as long as you check their paws every day. If you do a good glue job they will last about 2-4 weeks. One cat tries to pull them off all day and one doesn’t really care. I should try some super duper glue to see if they will stay on longer. We used to trim their nails but then they would spend the days after resharpening their nails. Go on amazon and get the packs that come with super glue. Don’t order ones too big.

Most vets will not recommend declawing because they say it is like cutting off the tips of your fingers. If they will do it they want to do it when they are young because it is easier for them to heal and less traumatic for young cats.

I too was bamboozled into allowing this feline menace into the house. Years ago. Long before we had rug-rats of our own.

Had three of the dumb things for quite a while. Of course, yours truly was the only one to clean the litter boxes, feed and water them, pay them any attention.

One morning, about 5 years ago, one was laying dead on the floor. Aww, well, I'm sure she's in a better place...

A couple years later, another one got sick, and I honestly felt a little bad about that one. Went downhill pretty fast. Something was up in the morning, by the time I came home from work, it was close to death. By the time I got dressed (to take her out in the country and give it a "shot") it had died. Aww, well, I'm sure she's in a better place...

Still got one of left.

Anyhow, keep them in your yard. If that means you have to keep them in your house, so be it. I don't appreciate their gifts in my kids sandbox. Don't appreciate watching them on the fence, eyeballing the bird bath.

Don't care what you do in your house, but if you like your furniture, have them declawed. I'm sure it doesn't feel nice, but I also know that cats are tough, and they get over it in about a day or so.

I guess I could start telling ours to stay in the yard when I let them out, but. 1. i don't think they listen 2. i don't think they care 3. i don't give a crap what they do (well except the walking on cars thing) 4. seems like they will live too long if they don't go out adventuring 5. if they disappear due to their adventures, no vet bill, no disposal bill or task.

A house cat will not retrieve birds during a organized cock hunt, but may chase a laser light right into the fire pit
