I think if I were going to try to enter the 1/2Tn-1Tn pickup market from scratch, I’d go to industry 1st rather than consumers. Mining, logging, oil patches, seed/fertilizer sales. Offer industry partners unbeatable pricing in exchange for full-time telematics data to REALLY find out how trucks are used “in the real world”: Idle time, throttle positions, every shift, every switch into/out of 4WD. Every time the traction/stability control activated with a GPS pin And real-time weather info from the nearest weather station. 3-D laser mapping of the tires at a minimum, every oil change, full-time live 3-d laser mapping data would be even better. Real-time video from every camera on the pickup. I’d think there’s probably a way to measure the acoustics of every major component of the power-train. Basically a way to listen for contact within the system that shouldn’t be there. Dragging piston rings, non/under-lubricated camshaft, crank, piston bearings & wrist-pin contact noise, basically everything from the clutch fan off the front pulley to the rear-end. VERY strongly magnetized drain plugs for the motor, transmission, transfer case, both differentials and everything run off of a belt or chain if the motor. Acoustics for all of the running gear and suspension as well. Axle-shafts and their bearings, wheel bearings, driveshaft and perhaps a carrier bearing if it’s got one. All of the suspension pivot points to “hear” any bushing wear, dragging shocks, shifting front and/or rear springs, and dragging brakes. I’d want it all in order to “bullet-proof” EVERYTHING for the consumer.
