Compost vs. Screen Black Dirt for Garden

Thanks for all the information! I'll have to look into the different soil mixtures to see what's best. It will be a learning experience, so I'm not expecting to perfect everything the first year. I'm planning on setting up a drip irrigation system with a timed pump to control the flow out of a rain barrel that will be located near the planters.

One more thing to think about.... I have used the black woven plastic weed fabric to control weeds in the section of garden with individual plants like peppers, tomatoes, etc. Took a 4" diameter pipe and heated it up with a torch to burn holes in the fabric where I wanted the plants. It worked real well. Having a 4' wide bed would be ideal for it. could run irrigation under it all as well.
