Registration for Bismarck, Century, Legacy and Mandan High Schools’ Clay Target League Teams competing in the 2018 Spring North Dakota State High School Clay Target League (ND CTL) will begin on Jan. 22 and run through Mar. 1. The spring season consists of eight weeks; two practice weeks, a reserve week, and five weeks of league competition, running from Apr. 1 to May. 25, with all rounds to be shot at Capital City Gun Club (CCGC) north of Bismarck. Students in grades 6-12 with valid firearms safety certificates may register by attending one of the Informational and Sign-Up Meetings for each school as follows:

Bismarck/Wachter – Jan. 22, 5:30pm, BHS Rm 121-122; Feb. 8, 7:00pm at ABM, 4480 Coleman St., Bis.
Century/Horizon – Jan. 23, 5:30pm, CHS Library; Feb. 6, 7:00pm at ABM, 4480 Coleman St., Bis.
Legacy/Simle – Jan. 29, 5:30pm, SaberCenter; Feb. 8, 7:00pm at ABM, 4480 Coleman St., Bis.
Mandan High/Middle – Jan. 30, 5:30pm, MHS Cafeteria, Feb. 6, 7:00 at ABM, 4480 Coleman St., Bis.

The cost is $300.00 for the season, with participants providing their own 12- or 20-gauge shotgun, safety glasses and ear protection, all other items are covered. Participants will enroll and pay at the meetings above; $270.00 by check, and $30.00 by credit card online to the ND CTL for league registration. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their hunter’s education number with them to registration.

In its second year, the Missouri River Clay Target League (MR CTL) serves as the parent organization for the four area schools’ participation in the rapidly-expanding ND CTL with a staff of 16 volunteer coaches and the facilities at CCGC serving as the backdrop for the pursuit of safe, fun and marksmanship-oriented competition in the state league, now entering its fourth year.

“The community, school, business and sportsman organizations’ support for this program in just its second year has been amazing and has helped to keep the program affordable,” said Coach Nick Simonson, “we cannot thank those sponsors enough for their backing.”

Last year, more than 900 North Dakota high school students participated in the Spring League, and it is anticipated that over 1,200 will compete in the coming season on more than 50 teams statewide. The only travel required, other than to the nearby CCGC facility, is the ND CTL State Championship tournament in Horace, N.D. on June 16 & 17. For more information on the ND CTL, visit ndclaytarget.com.

Unlike sports such as baseball, where the tenth best player sits on the bench, every student athlete gets to shoot each week and measure their progress against all other athletes in their conference. The popularity of CTL has grown so rapidly in part because it provides an alternative outdoor sport in which everyone can participate and boasts a flawless safety record. Since its beginning, there have been zero injuries in CTL practices and competitions, over 17 years and more than 50,000 participants.

“We’re excited to provide this safe, fun and expanding opportunity to all of the young people in the Bismarck-Mandan area, and are looking forward to building on last year’s experience,” said Simonson, “these four teams have an incredible crop of young talent with established leaders and with more interested students joining this spring, we are putting together some very competitive squads,” he concluded.

In addition to attending the sign-up and informational meetings, parents can enroll their youth, or learn more about the teams by calling Simonson at (507)829-9553 or emailing mrctl25@gmail.com

Good morning NDA crew!

Just a quick update on the Bismarck/Mandan CTL teams after our enrollment meetings at each school and one last plug for our final "catch-all" sign-up meetings next week.

Currently, we're over 100 kids, with 50+ signing up at Mandan alone on Tuesday. To put that in perspective, we had 48 from all three Bismarck schools shoot last fall.

Legacy has about 40 kids signed up. We're a little light at Bismarck (8) and Century(13). So if you know any kids there, please let them know about this great opportunity! I have had a number of folks say that they saw it here first, or a buddy saw it on NDA and referred it to them and their son/daugther. So thank you for your support!
