My dad's choc lab got into a big one earlier this spring. Atleast it wasn't a porcupine, you think she'd learn after the first one.

Super glue,or stiches would be my guess. With super glue the tongue would have to be dry of blood, and saliva. I wouldn't want to be the one stitching it up, or super gluing it unless you have some sleeping pills you can give it.

i would think being in the mouth it should stop bleeding and the saliva would help keep it clean and help it heal up

If it's just a slow leak it probably isn't worth putting the dog through hell and writing a check to the vet.

Rusty beat me to it. Had a small hunting dog that had enough terrier in het to make her mean and ruthless. She found a woodchuck under an old wooden building and started grunting, growling and digging. She was under there in np time and I heard a loud chirp from the chuck and all was quiet for a few seconds then a high pitched yelp from the dog. She came out of there and was rubbing her nose on the ground . When she quit yelping and digging her nose in the dirt so I could see what the deal was , almost half her nose was gone . It was tender for a while but surprisingly it scabbed over and partially grew back.

If it were my dog, I'd let'er buck for a few days. Just keep and eye on the leaking. If it doesn't heal by then, off to the vet I'd go. If it's not a pain in the backside, let us know how it turns out. Thanks!!!

Try pouring some table sugar on it. You may need a half cup or so but works well to stop most bleeding.

Call the vet and tell them what happened. They will probably give you an antibiotic over the phone without having to pay for a visit.

When I was 10 or 12 years old me and my dog came on a badger just digging a hole. My dog had killed badgers before so he dived right down the hole after the badger. The badger turned around and grabbed my dog by the tongue and wouldn't let go. I didn't know he had the dog by the tongue and wanting to help the dog out I grabbed him by the tail and started pulling. Poor dog had the badger hanging on one end and me on the other. Badger finally let go and me and the dog went ass over backwards. Dog had some big holes in his tongue but it only made him madder. I finally threw a rock down the hole and hit the badger on the nose stunning him for a second and the dog dived in and grabbed the badger and pulled him out. He shook that badger like a dirty rug until he broke the badgers neck or back and then finished him off. Toughest dog I ever knew. Never did anything to treat his tongue and he healed up fine. Sorry for the long story.

Dogs are tough sumbitches. Tongues bleed like crazy, but they heal up fast, too (as long as the big vein isn't cut).

Here's a picture of Remy in 2011 immediately after running into barbwire en route to a downed pheasant. Two puncture wounds on the top and a deep slice along the bottom of his tongue. His mouth was open and he bled for 15 minutes until he was red from the tip of his nose to the pads of his feet. I didn't know anything could bleed that much and still live. But after we sat around for a half hour the bleeding stop and he finished the day -- and got the rest of my limit.
