Had fish from horsehead last year caught end of July. All fish were bled out, iced immediately and had the fillets zippered. They were absolutely awful tasting.
Fished there last weekend and they smelled awful. I’ve never smelled walleye like that. Must be the diet of shrimp and fly larvae. Some where mayfly but there was another fly that I wasn’t sure what it was but I have never seen a fly hatch like this in my life. At times it was unbearable.

Yep, I tend to use those fish to donate to those who don't fish, but enjoy walleye dinners. We may notice it far more than the casual diner because they never complain.

As I recall, the late summer fish out of Horsehead were noticeably softer fillets from about mid-July to mid-August.
