feeder tripod legs

I am building what seem to be the world's most expensive feeders (55 gallon drums hanging under a tripod).

I need 1 5/8 OD or smaller pipe/tubing in 14-15 ft lengths (or linkable sections) to serve as the legs. 1-1/4" Schedule 40 black pipe is perfect - but would cost in the neighborhood of $100 per feeder. Ick.

Oil field tubing, pipe, and sucker rod are in play but the dimensions aren't rational and that crap gets crazy heavy fast.

Anybody know if water well drillers, etc. have "used" 1 1/4 schedule 40 for sale? I'm striking out with "junk yards" etc. How can a guy track down used 1 1/4"? Anybody have ideas?

feeders hold about 350lb of corn to give you an idea of what's going to be hanging under the tripod

thanks!

man your making this tougher than it needs to be. spend the $100 for a moltery feeder and be done with it.. but i know the allure of DIY stuff,, i once was going to build a canvas tent out of electrical conduit unit some ppl on here talked me out of it and buying a used one for less than it would have cost to build it.

as you may be aware, once I decide to do something it's often too late to save me from myself

they are already built - just need to hang them

was going to hang between trees, but decided I wanted flexibility

You could check with come contractors. Sprinkler fitters & plumbers come to mind. They may have some pipe laying around from a demo they did or in the process of doing.

baiting - yes
Meh... hope someone took a leak in the barrel before you got it.. sorry, nothing against you and I know it is perfectly legal. It’s just not for me and I couldn’t keep my mouth shut :). Could try sashing 3 long sticks together with rope into a tripod?

how about chain link fence pipe?

yeah - I've been mulling over the 1 5/8 stuff - read that it's way more kinkable and when it kinks it fails - I don't want it to fail (I will never ever stand under it - but 400 lb coming down would ruin a lot of stuff)

also - I can't find chain link post mating sleeves in 1 5/8 in this town

there are cows (and the associated bulls) on the property on occasion so I am leery about designing light

I’d spend the hundo and be done, but then again I would have just bought a working feeder to start. I have more projects for you in your future spare time;-)

I think I've seen something before at an ag implement. Think of a heavy steel ring, maybe 5 feet across, four posts welded on both ends to a smaller ring, maybe 2ft across that you could suspend it from. Otherwise, I don't know where you'd find what you are looking for.

I have the tripod header.

I built the feeder.

I have the winch.

I have the cable.

I am simply looking for used pipe/tubing to function as legs.

Yeah, I figured I wasn't any help. Which junk yards have you tried? There is a salvage yard in Minot that does a shit ton of metal recycling. I assume they are still in business.

Google tells me the company I'm thinking about is Continental Metal Products/Dakota Pipe and Steel.

What are you using for a fan or a distribution system? Battery or solar cell power? If cattle are present how will you keep them from rubbing against the legs. I would hate to see the mess (and required repairs) if it was knocked over. Putting them out in the Killdeer Mts?
