The wife and I did a few years back when we were camping at Bemidji State Park. Park Rangers were conducting a class for folks that wanted to learn how to geocache so we signed up. It was only a couple hours...split us in teams of 2 or 3 and handed each team one of those older yellow lowrance hand helds..I think it was Lowrance. Anyway...after a brief schooling on how the hand helds worked. Sent one team out with a paper cup(with hand held on) ..told them to walk here and there and come back after 10 minutes after they had hid the cup. Once they got back..they gave their gps to another team and that team followed the route to where the cup was. Worked pretty slick for most teams. The kids present thought it was magic. ahha. I am not sure if MN State Parks still have geocaching(find what the park has hidden) at most of their State Parks but they did 6- 7yrs ago I know. Haven't done it since. I could see how some people who want something to do at the different parks they travel to could get addicted to finding the prize so to speak.

I have only done it a couple times @ Cross ranch State park, was fun learning how to use a hand held gps unit for the first time but this was many years ago already.

By chance I found one when I was taking a close look at a very old stagecoach in Utah. There was a crack in the door panel with something stuffed in it so I dug it out and it was a camera film container wrapped in cloth, There was a note inside that explained what was going on so I put it back.

I get emails from magellan members who participated in scavenger hunting, but when I look for close groups, all are in Minnesota.

I thought I found one once out pheasant hunting, it was a small dog kennel (used for like a toy poodle or some other POS dog). I pulled it out of the bush and opened it up only to find a half rotted pet cat someone had "buried," it was the grossest thing I have ever encountered. The whole event kind of turned me off from geocaching.

I do quite a bit in the summer time. Mainly just check out caches to burn free time when I'm visiting new places. It's actually pretty fun.

I've found two or three whilst mushrooming.

Using whilst in sentences is oddly satisfying.
