That is unreal, myself and 4 kids hunted 2G1 in its glory days. We would get 4 or 5 Buck tags and at least 6 to 8 Doe tags for the kids. I go back to the areas and you don't even recognize it. All the CRP is gone and no more shelterbelts or abandoned farmstead.

One year we got like 4 or 5 extra Does tags in 2H. Just to hunt something different. I think we had them filled in 2 hrs.

The gratis big game program is 1 of the most abused G & F laws on the books!
Drop the gratis system all-together. everybody applies and pays for ALL big game tags.

I'm not against gratis tags. Never have been. But I do know landowners who very seldom shoot deer on there land. And I knew all the landowners. No one should be hunting grasslands, PLOTS, WPA land this year in 2G1 for Deer.

That is incorrect. It only needs to be actively farmed or ranched if the application is by a lessee. If you hold title you do not need to farm or ranch it.

Like it or not, that is the law and it is enforced and applications are reviewed to try and catch those who don't qualify. The problem is there are around 13,000-14,000 gratis deer applications with only a couple people to review them, who also have other job duties. And this needs to be done in a very short time frame or everyone complains that the lottery takes too long. Many are unfortunately going to be missed in the review process.
Make it easy then...like no gratis tags. Done deal.

I hope that guy from Bowman chimes in about not getting "his" gratis goat tag...righteous asshole thinks he owned all the goats on his land and now was going to post it all up...ha! It was all pay to play hunting to begin with.

Clayton always got a gratis goat tag and always let others hunt. He didn't get one this year because of SB 2155.

Ruttin, now would be a good time to whack that beehive. Or maybe not. Anyone can look up the testimony at the legislature on SB 2155 (the Pronghorn Bill). There was no oral opposition. Landowners were sleeping on that one. The pretend sportsmen org Backcountry Hunters and Anglers chair Brock Wahl led the proponents. He and John Bradely paid lobbyist ND Wildlife Federation were the only two who testified.

GnF is supposed to be neutral in these States Rights issues. Casey Anderson GnF felt it necessary to speak. He wasn't neutral.

Yes this its dumb know of landowners that never kill on their own land also when tag is a given. Also a fewl landowners that don't believe in tags.

Sounds to me like anyone other than a youth hunter who shoots a deer on public in 2g1(with a rifle) , can be reported for poaching. Going to be a fun opener! Bow in the back seat and spotting scope in the front, on the hunt for bucks and gratis tag holders that are hunting public.

PLOTS are still privately owned lands, meaning the landowner can hunt them with a gratis tag.

  • Land requirement: Must own or lease at least 150 acres for agricultural purposes, and actively farm or ranch that land.
The actual century code.

3. a. An individual, corporation, limited liability company, limited liability partnership, limited partnership, partnership, trust, or life estate that hold title to at least one hundred fifty acres [60.70 hectares] of land is eligible to submit one application for a license to hunt deer without charge, or if the individual named to receive the license is a nonresident, upon payment of the fee required for a nonresident big game license.

b. A resident that is an individual, corporation, limited liability company, limited liability partnership, limited partnership, partnership, trust, or life estate that has executed a lease for at least one hundred fifty acres [60.70 hectares] of land and that actively farms or ranches that land is eligible to submit one application for a license to hunt deer without charge. Upon request, a lessee shall provide proof the land described in the completed application is leased for agricultural purposes. If not otherwise specified in an agricultural lease, the landowner is entitled to receive the license. An individual issued a license under this subsection must be a resident.

Get rid of gratis tags and the e-posting or at least make it mandatory to have the landowner who uses e posting to list their phone numbers. Had good luck and received permission from two different landowner's hunting goats this year because they listed their contact info. They didn't answer the initial call but did respond via text and said "have at 'em, good luck." We were very thankful for the access and let them both know.

Like we taxpayers don't give landowners (farmers/ranchers) enough already.
How much do you think it actually costs to have an animal on your propery?
And if you post all your property to hunters, no way in hell should you be given depredation help or gratis tags.
And dump the E-posting law....pure bull!

E-posting is just another step to their goal of having everything posted without posting.

Cut to the chase and just do it…..whatever.

The congresswoman who was a big supporter and i think the author of the E posting bill has been appointed to serve again due to a death. We all need to reach out to her and demand a new draft of the bill to make it law to have the phone numbers posted. They don't meet until 2027 but it never hurts to start early.
