What do you guys use to find an appropriate price for a firearm?
I did find this website but not sure if there is better information out there. ??
truegunvalue.com
Depends on if you're talking about something that's very popular with lots of examples for sale, or something that's older and/or something less common that doesn't have as many examples to cross-reference.
It also depends on what “value” you mean:
1. Are you trying to find replacement value for Ins purposes?
2. Are you selling a used gun to someone and want to make sure the deal is fair to both yourself and the buyer?
3. Are you trading or selling a gun to a gun-shop?
4. Are you trying to value an entire “collection”? Then to what end? Fair dispersal to heirs? Selling the entire collection because you’ve lost interest, don’t want to burden your heirs.
5. Putting reserves on items going to auction.
6. Collection or individual values splitting assets in a divorce at which point both parties need to decide if they’re going to use replacement cost, actual value today, or actual value based upon what a dealer would offer you for an entire collection as those 3 amounts will be vastly different.
For used guns, going to Gunbroker and using the "Quick Filter", I'll click "used" and "Buy it Now". That allows a person a chance to see what's available and what price a person can actually buy it for right now, today without dealing with an auction scenario.
The true gun site is a fair reference as well, depending upon how many examples of your specific item have been reported to them.
Anything "Custom" becomes a real crapshoot unless the work was done by a nationally known entity. "Home-build/Self-build" AR rifles, you're LUCKY if you get most of your parts investment back.
