I am shopping for a handheld gps. My number 1 goal is to set a way point and then go back to the waypoint a month later and get very close to the exact location. Number 2 goal would be having a good lake contour map of area lakes. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I had a handheld Garmin that was lost on a duck hunt several years ago, it was great for lake maps and marking hunting spots. Never replaced it as iPhone Maps and Navionics do everything I need.

I fish some areas with poor cell service so was thinking the phone app would not always work, right?

Scheels has the Garmin 64st on sale for $230. Regular price is 350. I just picked one up, and with my very limited experience so far, I can already tell I like it waaay more then my touch screen Oregon 450. I would never buy another touch screen GPS.

Yeah it was embarrassing. Told my friends on Saturday (NDSU homecoming 2015) that I was going to be out late and not go duck hunting Sunday. I got home at 3am and they showed up around 4, got into my place (best friend has a key), dragged me out of bed and put me in their pickup. They also grabbed my gun, waders and GPS. That was the last time I saw the Garmin and I bet it is sitting in the muck of a dried up slough. If anyone finds a GPS with the waypoint called 'duckbeans' I will give you a cash reward.

I picked up the Garmin e-trex 20. Works well. The only downside is screen size. The eyes are not what they once were. Test the unit in the store to make sure you are going to be able to see what you want to see and also how easy is it to punch in a waypoint. Think about a man over board situation where seconds count.

I have the garmin 64,you can probly pickup even less than 64st,not quite as much memory and no electronic compass solid unit, locks on fast and stays locked on.I am very happy with this unit,I also prefer keypad over touchscreen and dont need alot of features I will never use, also a menu that is easy to use.

My Garmin 64 took a fall off my boat at about 45mph on to a highway once. Had some scuffs but still works fine 3 years later now if that helps.

I have a magellan explorist 710 as far as I know they are one of two manufacture to use the navionics map. I have talked extensively on this hand held and what it can do.

I have the Garmin GPSMAP 78s paired with a NDTRAX chip and absolutely love the combo for myself, if you are near Bismarck let me know and I will let you test drive it. Had it about 5 years and still works great. dukgnfsn

I Personally use my phone and the OnX app for all my hunting gps needs. If you plan ahead you don't need cell phone signal. When I draw a rifle tag for 3b1 I always download and save the entire set of map data for the area I'm hunting. The only downside to this is that the phone still needs the GPS to be turned on. This can drain your battery fairly quick, but what I've found is that if you are in an area with crappy cell signal, put the phone on airplane mode, and then turn on location/gps services. It helps to save battery. I also carry one of those nifty little "battery packs" with as well. something kinda like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0194WDVHI/?tag=nodakangler10-20

It has worked out well for me, and I use it every year both for deer hunting when I draw a tag, and then when coyote hunting gets good I use the power pack to power my ATN XSIGHT 2.

Another satisfied Garmin 64s user here. Went with the 64 over the Oregon for the physical keys vs touchscreen. Use it when Im fishing in someone elses boat and for hunting. No regrets so far.

I have a Garmin Montana and owned an Oregon for 6 or so years before that. Never had any issue with either.

I will say the Montana is everything I was hoping for in an improvement over the Oregon.

The larger screen makes a huge difference and really makes the touch screen aspect of things function a lot better.
I also like the hybrid aspects the Montana has of a backpacking handheld as well as a vehicle navigation GPS. It allows me to run one unit for every situation imaginable for hunting and ice fishing... Have it on the dash plugged in (and charging internal battery) when driving and have all the NDTRAX info and can grab it and throw it in a pocket or backpack when on foot.
The rechargeable battery pack is everything you need for any day hunt and you can remove it and use AA if you are on an extended backpack hunt.

Agreed. I also he the Oregon prior to the Montana. HATED the Oregon. Love the MT. I too run it on the charging window mount cradle. It's always on and is grab and go.
