Part of the reason batter falls off is when the onions hit the oil the onion starts to release its juices. The solution is a drier onion. Slice the top and bottom your onions and then peel them and place uncovered in the fridge for 24hours. This dries them out which means less liquid is released and batter sticks better.

Since this came back up to the top, I will upate you all on Al's recipes in GF.

One of his cooks has started a new restaurant. It is on south washington in between Taco Johns and Mcdonalds. It is called Scotty's Deli and it is more of a lunch counter style place. Last Wednesday was his first day. Cheesy hashbrown and kneophla soups were on the menu the first day! I imagine you can get o-rings too.

I've found readily observable porn greatly increases transport efficiency and volume to the cooking area.

I would have killed to have the recipe that Al's in Grand Forks had. Best I've ever had hands down. Sadly, he sold the property and closed the doors. I haven't tried making them myself, but if a good recipe comes along I'll give it a shot.

Al's place was up for sale and along with the sale would have been his recipe for his onion rings and all the rest of his menu recipes. We ate there every time we were up in the GF area. Unfortunately no one bought Al's place or inherited his recipes.

Oops, should have read all the posts before I posted. Will check out the new place in GF!!

I make beer battered onion rings. I cut the rings first and let them dry while I get the rest of the meal ready. The batter seems to stick pretty good.
