Being a bismarck guy I almost never fish away from the river the first month and a half of open water season. Have a couple Lakes I'm going to hit and was just wondering what you guys see for eye activities? Just wondering how soon the bite picks up and what you prefer to use. Just your standard jig and a minnow, lindy rigs or crank baits and other artificial?

jig/minnow or plastics is my first option. Then cranks. If I'm really desperate, I'll drag a lindy rig which usually gets me fish and I curse the fact that my old man was right once again.

I used to be strictly a jig/minnow guy..Then I was introduced to Lindys, pretty much all I use from shore now....Swim baits worked well for me too.

You can just cast and retrieve slowly or just leave it out there and rig it up on a rod holder and maybe put a bell on the rod.

gravel of any sort (probably obvious). if it's wind blown a bit even better. as light a jig as possible with a minner would be my first choice. cast and hop back mind numbingly slow.

once water warms a bit obviously a guy can get more aggressive

I usually cast out...nothing bites within a few mins or less...I slowly drag it across bottom...pause in between drags

Had a guy tell me to put shotgun shell casings over the end of your rod when fishing lindys from shore. They will pop off when you get a bite. Anybody done that?

Ya. That works for any rig you toss out and let sit. Wind will trip them though. And so does a good current. And they also get lost if you are fishing from rocks or rip rap. So, when and where to use them can be limited.

Bobbers is what I use but I've used empty cans over the end of my pole at times.

Yeah done it. Still prefer the bells especially the ones that lock on so you don't end up launching it fifty yards when you set the hook.
