I'm sure the reason was to avoid any injuries or worse, but given how rare tigers are don't you think they could have tried to dart it first?

they did the right thing...didn't seem to worried about the dog, more worried about kids and others coming out in the morning. Good decision.

I probably would have offered it a steak and a bowl of milk … then we would have become friends and I would call it Hobbes and we would do all kinds of wacky things together… like make snow sharks...

That kind of stuff I don't second guess. Any idea how long it would take for them to track down a vet or animal handling professional with a pneumatic gun-and-dart pre-rigged to put a big kitty to sleep? And let's say while they're fumbling through the Google and getting someone to come out, said big kitty mauls or kills a kid. Then the outcry is "OMG WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST SHOOT THE THING??"

Nope--a couple rounds of 9mm probably did us all a favor and maybe even avoided a tragedy. BONUS: The police station now can have a sweet new rug to greet visitors.

Always easy to second guess things when you aren't in the middle of the storm. I am guessing not a single one of these officers had ever seen a tiger outside of a cage/circus before this and wisely chose to not become an expert on this encounter. It's not like someone was standing there claiming the cat and trying to put it back into a cage using a bowl of Friskies.

Not trying to be critical of you, Watson...just saying this had to be a fairly intense morning for local law.

Cops need to think pretty quickly. Not always turns out but in this case, it did. Pretty easy to armchair something over several days that the cop had several seconds to decide.

There is around 3,800 tigers in the wild world wide and something like 5,000 to 10,000 captive in the United States so I'm pretty sure we can pop one here and there if they start showing up randomly in somebodys yard in big citys. Plus most of the tigers here are considered mutts that are no good for helping the wild population.
