Not at the boat, back in GF. I have a Lowrance HDS8 and looking for better resolution and was told the new Lowrance Carbon is the ticket. Can I network these two so I don't have to mount a new transducer? My existing transducer is mounted inside the boat. Please help before I jump in the deep end of the pool.

Pretty sure you can unplug the HDS and plug the carbon in should use the same pin connector, my question is why not go with 3d or structure or di transducer?

Couple of things Zog, you can network an HDS 8 with a Carbon but you will have to update the HDS to the newest software version or they won't talk to each other very well. If you have the gen 2 HDS they will work without a hitch after the update, because I have one networked to my Gen 3 touch units. As a side note, the power cable and transducer cables are compatible with the Carbon and will plug right in. Let us know how it goes.

Check the silver label on the graph end of the transducer cord, it will read something like hst-wst... (I don't know for sure). These are the most common transducers with lowrance units. If the tags match then there is no need to swap them out.

Unless you are talking the Total Scan transducer. Then I'm not sure.

Your old HDS should be just a straight 83/200 transducer. The carbon should work with that for your regular 2d sonar but I don't think the chirp frequencies will work with that transducer. Update the transducer to get full functionality out of the carbon.

Not entirely true. The chirp is something that tha head unit can do, transducers are dummies that get "driven" by the head unit.

I have some issues with my HDS 5 gen 1 getting sonar working. The minnkota bow mount transducer won't read on it and won't read the transom transducer. I know my HDS7 and the 5 are linked because my new waypoints plot on both but just can figure out how to get the sonar working on the 5?

Any particular tricks?
