Male or female

The subject of dog breeds has been beat to death. If you could pick a dog based only on gender, would you pick a male or female and why?

I got a male from a large pairing of labs, 85 lb male x 70lb female because I do a lot of goose hunting and I wanted a big dog to handle big geese. In retrospect, I probably didn't need that big of dog.

Females have my nod so far. I've got a male of a different breed that might change my mind though. Time will tell. Generally, here is my thinking.... most dogs can hunt. Controlling and directing them is paramount. Females (when discussing dogs) seem to be more interested in pleasing and listening than males. I'm sure there are exceptions and my experience is somewhat limited to the 4 I've owned and the 20 or so I've done a decent amount of hunting with. So, I won't claim it's gospel. I suspect a really good dog whisperer will tell you males are preferred.

A neutered male is all I have ever owned, a buddy has a female Chesapeake, she defines the word bitch, nasties dog I've ever been around, but a pretty good hunter.
I lived in a house full of girls for a long time and want to bring another male in. Never had an issue with a nutted dog, but if you leave them intact they tend to listen less.

Not sure about all breeds but I really am torn when it comes to Brittanys. I've had both. Males are generally bigger and handle the cat tails better. But my current dog (female) will go anywhere needed. Just harder to see. The females seem a bit easier to train. My next will be a male as that is what my wife wants.

IMO it dpends on what you are looking for in a dog and what breed you are looking at. Some breeds they say females listen better and the next they say males listen better. Reegardless of gender I'm a firm believer it all depends how much training time you are willing to spend with your dog.

She's only gone once and I said "that's weird, he's never done that" when he marked a weed. We males have to back each other up.

Not much experience, but love my female lab. she doesn't destroy stuff and remembers a few good lessons. I have seen lot male labs just destroy everything just for fun, get corrected, and do it again.
