Yes. In order to have transmission or reception range worth any value, you will want to have an antenna. Since VHF will essentially be line-of-sight, if you have any intention of ever using the radio during an emergency you will want an antenna.

One option is to consider a handheld unit with an antenna. Buy a good one with decent wattage. Most good handhelds will give you 15 miles (line of sight) of transmission range.

Yes people use them but not as much as back in the day. They are a good back up to cell phones.

I have 8ft fiberglass antenna, ram mount, and radio you can have if you want it. I saw it in the shop last week and was gonna throw it all away.

I put a Ray Marine with eight foot antenna in my boat as a safety item before I added a second motor. While on Deveils Lake there was a lot of chatter, but none of it boats. It was more like " Martha while your in town stop by John Deere and pick me up an air filter".
