Minnesota boat trailer regulations

I've tried to call 8 different people at Minnesota DNR to ask about boat trailer registration requirements and not one has answered their phone so I thought I'd come to the experts. I have a buddy heading to Minnesota with his boat. Obviously in North Dakota we don't have to license boat trailers. Does anyone know what the regs are in Minnesota? Will they let him by since we don't require it or does he need to get a trailer license?

I have never had a trailer license on mine and used to go to mn a lot when I live by fagro. not sure anything has changed in the last 6 years.

They do have a requirement for license on the trailer and I do pay for the utility license every year. I know a few guys who don't and seem to get away with it. You probably are safe, but there's always that one guy with a stick up his ass.

My MN trailer is licensed. But, coming from ND, I think you would be fine.

Thanks guys. He did just go down and get it licensed as a utility trailer. For $20 for 2 years it's better than taking the chance.

It also minimizes risk of getting pulled over "as an excuse". So if you like to tip a few on the lake a license removes a legal reason for getting pulled over.

Bad boat trailer lights have lead to MANY a DUI.
