new reel for all around use?

Well… I have to confess I bought a couple of Supreme XTs today because they were the only middle range reels on sale at Scheels.

I now have seven or eight XTs and/or Patriarchs on a wide range of rods… jigging, pitching, corking, etc.

I’m a creature of habit which is sorta boring - but predictable. At least I know what the reel is gonna feel like regardless of which rig I pick up. Ha ha.

I think I am the only person that has ever had bad luck with Pflueger. I had a couple and if I cast cranks all day, at some point the line would get pinched in the roller. Would either nick the line or snap it. Now they are dead to me.

I think they removed the back reel switch too.

On occasion I will bump the anti-reverse switch on a reel that has one… and just about crap myself at how spazzy I react when the reel starts reeling backwards “on its own” out of the blue.

I used to always get Shimano reels until they eliminated the back reel switch, which everyone agrees is a must have. Anyway I contacted them and asked them why and they said drags are better now and the switch was one more point where water and dust could get into the reel.

I recently had to address my wife's old tried and true Shimano Symetre. We own several and all their anti-reverses eventually require maintenance - which is no big deal.

But I bet lazy or ignorant people just get pissed off and junk it and buy another brand after they fail - so Shimano took the easy route and got rid of them.

Maybe 25+ years ago I was a big fan of Shimano reels, but then started running into a metric shit ton of problems with the bales on them. I think I may still have one old Shimano (yes, with bale issues) on a rod I rarely employ, and have gone to Pflueger spinning reels and Daiwa line-counters for trolling rods. I know people who like their Okuma line-counter reels, but I can't stand the drag on those pieces of crap.

Shimano Stradics are my new favorite for my light tackle reels. Ive been using them for 3 years, had them on multiple saltwater/surf trips, been dropped in the sand and surf many times, absolutely zero noise, stiffness, or wobble....still just as smooth as they were on day one.

I have one too. Same thoughts, but it seems heavier than the Pfluegers, which can be a good thing for certain tasks IMO.
