I don't need buttons on buttons, so I went Toyota, and may never look back.

Previous lifetime Chevy guy.

My research took me to the Tundra as well. They have fewer bells and whistles which is made up for in quality and less crap to break over time. Only a few thousand more. Made in USA with American steel and the highest percentage of american components for trucks.

The mileage isn't the best but I don't buy a truck for mileage....that's why the wife has a car.

Tundra crew here as well, had an 11 w 4.6, then went to 5.7 in my 13 for the fifth wheel, great ride, well worth the little extra $

Look at the contenders, test drive a few, and buy the one that makes "it" move.

For black ops and outrunning the cops: Buy an old Chevy van, paint it primer black, and then drop a chev 572 crate motor in her with tubbed slicks on the back.

P.S. Add NOS if dissatisfied with 621 hp on pump gas.

Disclaimer: This may be cost prohibitive to your budget.

i think you're on to something.

Just figure out what you want in a truck and go test drive some. I'm not a brand loyal guy, I buy what i think is the best for me at the time i purchase. I wanted a double cab, 6.5 bed, V8, cloth split bench seat, good gas mileage. I ended up with a 2015 GMC and have been happy so far with everything. I had a dodge before and will try every other truck before i go back to that, lost a tranny at 40k among other things.

Tundra - Nice truck, but worst gas mileage(4.30 gears) and never been a fan of the interiors.

Ford - no double cab option & didn't want an ecobust.

Dodge - just no!

I have a 2013 Ecoboost F150. Its been great. The fuel economy isn't all its cracked up to be. I get 15 to 17 in town, 17 to 18 on the highway. I get 8 to 10 pulling the boat and 7 to 8 pulling the boat and 5th wheel. Been a great truck. Mine has 30K on it but I have a friend that bought his a month or two later than I did and has over 90K on his. He pulls a 5th wheel and boat, but his boat is smaller than mine. He gets the same fuel economy I do!

If I could wave a magic wand:

Toyota Tundra Crewmax w/6.5'+ box, a few extra gears in the tranny or 3:73's out back, and no doggone floor shifter to get in the way where a rifle and shotgun are supposed to reside.

the guys warning about the 5.4l fords are correct. I have an 06' with just under 160k on it. it has been an excellent truck but at around 142k the 'cam phaser" went out. google cam phaser and youll find pages and pages of this problem on the 5.4l fords. not too mention the spark plugs on these fkn things.

other than that $1800 hiccup this truck has been fantastic.

2 to 5 years old…this is the same boat I was in 2 years ago…Ford isn’t bad and definitely go with the 5L a 5.4L is almost as bad as owning a Dodge…speaking of Dodge I would honestly get one before I went with Nissan.

Of course Tundra is the preferred choice but used ones with low miles are like rainbow striped unicorns…just not a lot out there. And if you are not needing the crewcab/fullcab/megacab feature then there should be some very affordable Fords on the market.
Chevy just doesn’t impress me…GMC is a little better but dang near the same price as a Tundra…so why wouldn’t you just get a Tundra

…anyways if you are looking for the extra cab room…keep an eye on the year of the vehicle Ford and Chevy both increased there cabin space recently (just not sure when) prior to that Tundra had the most rear cabin space in a ½ ton…draw back to Tundra Crew max only 5.5ft box ... also I read somewhere that Tundras were the highest rated zombie killing vehicle in today's market ;)

FWIW, we have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner, with 121K miles, and it works. Every single thing works flawlessly. Every light bulb, every drivetrain feature (center diff lockout, Downhill assist, etc). Every single switch, every single thing. I'm told that the timing belt will go, and that may be. But that's maintenance.

I can't complain about that.

I know, it's not a pickup, but my two cents are Toyota keeps on going.

Indeed. I have zero complaints with same setup. The 8-speed is unbelievably smooth and you don't even know the boat is back there. Four corner captive nitrogen air bags keeps everything level and happy all the time.

Not where I'd like to be
Already dipped in snow camo for those winter spec-ops:

WP_20160520_002.jpg

Picked this '15 up about a month ago. You say you don't need bells and whistles, but when you have them, they are 'neat'.
Gets 18-19mpg flying down the interstate at 80 (if the wind isn't a jerk). 15-17 with the boat on (at 55-60).

@Slim - let me know if you want to come have a look without a salesman breathing down your neck.

Previous lifetime Chevy guy.

That was why I bought a Ford. I stepped into a Chevy cab and thought I was in the cockpit of some convoluted airliner.

Bought my first brand new vehicle, a 2010 F150, and have never regretted the purchase. Zero issues. Will roll over to 100K this summer.

BUT, my good buddy has almost the exact same make/model and two summers ago he was driving 75 down the highway when his truck suddenly downshifted to first gear. Damn near rolled the truck. Tranny was trashed. Luckily it was under warranty, but that was a crazy, butt-puckering experience, the way he explains it.

BTW, I have owned two GMC pickups with the 6.2 and would never own a 5.3 again(owned two as well). Mileage in town isn't stellar(I would say 14ish), but highway mileage is on par with the rest of the pack(18-22). I can pull my 621 ranger around like a dream and still pull 11-13 MPG. One thing I like about the GMC is you can just take the air dam off the front bumper and have no worries about wrecking stuff when boondocking on a frozen lake. Also, the stock tires suck on pretty much every pickup now days. I would try trade the brand new stock tires for something that resembles a real pickup tire before you drive off the lot.

There are guys that will say stay away from the 5.4, however the later 5.4's were actually excellent motors, and produced some decent power numbers, almost 400 ft/lbs. The early ones did have issues with plug blow outs, cams etc. The 09-10's were also pretty fuel efficient overall. These same type of people will also say to stay away from the ecoboost, yet there have been very, very few issues with this motor, 11 and first half of 12 had issues with condensation build up with the turbo causing decreased performance and cut outs. Ford fixed this issue with a plate, cutout, allowing proper draining. If you can stay out of the throttle you will get close to spec mileage, but most guys like having fun with the twin turbos and are always into them. Wind plays a key role for the ecoboosts, if its windy, you aint getting crap for mileage (with ecoboost or about any other pickup), but the mileage decrease in the ecoboost will be more noticeable in heavy winds. For towing, there isn't another motor that really compares in a half ton currently. The 5.0 in the same pickups is a good, plain jane type runner, but a heavy load and its a dog down low.

Gm makes the most comfortable highway ride out there, whether its a 6.2, or a 5.3, they both pull solid mileage, but neither are a crap for towing anything overall heavy. For a boat and smaller trailers they are fine. Get into anything 6-7k+ and its a shit show.

Haven't been around the newer Dodges, but have heard some good things, again, as long as heavy loads aren't pulled.

The new toyotas are bad ass rigs. The ride isn't that great, but they are def. tough machines. Mileage sucks on them, but fun rides and seem durable.

Just made a 1,000 mile round trip to Wyoming in a F250 with a 5.4, pulling 8,000 lbs. 30-35 mph direct headwind on the way home. Pickup has 175,000 miles on it, and a 5 speed manual with 4:10's, she stayed in 4th gear the entire trip home, 70 mph, 3150 rpms, the entire time. Pulled 7.5 mpgs. I was actually happy. If you take care of them, any pickup, any brand, they will last.
