most guys I know use a digger/blade type anchor usually 25# or better depending on size of pontoon

Lincoln, kinda...
I tossed one of them into the river near Bismarck this spring.

After that I bought a Richter style anchor.

I love my digger anchor. Its got an interesting release mechanism that makes it nearly impossible to get hung up. Ive never had it happen. I aint sure why they dont make one bigger than 15 lbs though. Maybe thats plenty for most boats i guess. I hate being in a boat that wont stay put and this one does the trick.

the two anchors suggested are what I recommended to him also. I suggested getting two 15lbs digger anchors and use the two off the front of the toon. I also use the digger anchor off the boat and over all really like it. Have never used or have any experience with the Richter anchor but I think it would work well also. I do see they make the Richter anchor in a heavier weight, that may help. I will recommend the bungee to him also and I think I will get one for the boat also. I am looking at the anchor shock type-brand.

If you put out enough rope most any anchor will hold, the angle of the rope with the bottom makes a big difference.

Also, use the proper rope attached to the anchor. Certain ropes have no stretch and will pull the anchor out with any waves.

I had tried about half dozen anchors on my 22 foot triple tube pontoon and none worked on the river even using two together didn't hold it, several years back bought a small sized box anchor and it holds my toon solid in the main channel of the river with a 20+mph north wind. Friends have gone through the same thing and saved some money and took dimensions of mine and made their own only rigid non folding and love it too.

I am a big fan of Cat River Anchors. They were designed for the fast current of the MO and MS down south. Add 3' of chain and attach to a 100' rope and you will not break loose. Best part is they are designed to get back when they get stuck and cost about $30 less than a Richtor.

i will b ordering 1 of these... i have 2 diggers for the 20' tritoon, but won't hold in 20 mph winds and waves with 50' out in 15 fow... tried running 2 - 1 on each corner, but with the bow swing only 1 holds at a time anyway... if you need more than 50' of anchor rope out around anyone pulling plugs or rigs, you're gonna have a mess...

wild - would you get another small or move up a size???

Small size is more than plenty, buddy has a 24 foot tripple tube and it hold his too. I am on numerous boat and toon sites and groups online and the small size is going to be more than enough for a 20' toon. The only reason you would want two would be to control swing drift if you are worried about that. I couldn't imagine the large size the small is plenty good sized and heavy enough to work with. It does come in a very heavy duty carrying bag as well.

This is what size they recommend on their site.
Box Anchor sizes
Baby Box Anchor Personal watercraft
Small Box Anchor Offshore / Sport 18' to 30', cabin cruiser to 24'
Large Box Anchor Offshore / Sport to 40', cabin cruiser to 32'
Ex-Large Box Anchor House boats, cruisers longer than 32'
