awesome lake... we stay at rowans ravine and fish out of g&s marina... beautiful provincial campground, and g&s has cabins as well...

we haven't been back to tobin since we started fishing here... it's off the beaten path, literally, but way closer than tobin... bout 275 from williston... 10#+ eye and 20#+ pike potential every day... if you are a spinner or rigger stay on the north end... if you wanna rip buz bombs off the deep drop offs go south from rowans...

they r painted lead bodies that you thread onto your line like a slip bobber... they also come with a rubber grommet that goes on next, then tie on whatever hook you want...

they r heavy and made to fish fast and hard, like a kastmaster or sweedish pimple on steroids... i think they were developed for salmon and lakers in deep water, but the big eyes up there love them...

He is looking at ice fishing it. I will get a few more specific questions from him and PM those who stated okay to. I thank any who responded with information and any future answers. Sorry I didn't answer earlier but recovering from a knee scope last Friday. dukgnfsn

Never ice fished last mountain but I've been up there 3 times for open water. We stayed at g and s marina everytime. Robert Schulz is the owner and is one of the nicest guys you'll meet. We got a guide the first time up there and that guy showed us a technique I hadn't seen before. Sounds like the same principal as those buzz bombs but these were "fergie" jigging spoons. It's a fun way to fish and there are some big fish in that lake. They stress catch and release for the bigger fish and it seems most locals follow that which is why they have a healthy population of trophys.

I thought the guide was messing with us when he had us ripping these spoons as hard and we could and then just let the line go slack to sink back to the bottom. Turns out he wasn't messing with us. There is nothing finess about fishing that way and when you try to rip the spoon off the bottom and it doesn't budge, good times are about to be had. We kept alternating between last mountain and lake of the prairies. Both lakes are fun to fish but last mountain is pretty narrow so if the wind is blowing you have no where to hide. In the 3 times we went up there were got blown off the lake 1 day each trip.

Do you guys think Last Mountain is somewhat comparable to Winnipeg for big fish through the ice? We are looking into alternatives to Winnipeg, especially if this up coming trip is as dissapointing as the first.

A year or 2 ago I was on Winnipeg. Next Bite guys were there filming. Bumped into them at the bar and they told us that when Winnipeg falls, Lost Mountain will be the place to hit.

Sounds like Winnie is on the way down.....for us right now we are thinking of Last Mountain or out of Morson on LOTW. I don't think there is a really good chance at a giant out of Morson, but the area and scenery is very nice and fishing the islands and reefs is fun.

If your looking for a giant through the ice Peck is your huckleberry...
Last Mountain is one you should fish at least once a winter thou as is Winnipeg.
If your looking for a teener I'd spend as much time on Peck as I could then.

The disappointing part of Ft. Peck is the almost never reliable ice conditions. Way to many gas pockets and big winds that make the ice crappy. Add in the garbage access to the lake and then you understand why there are such big fish there.

We go up in the spring and then in the fall, we stay at G&S resort. Great fishing. We are the first ones there when Rob opens the resort and then we are the last group there when he closes. If your looking at Ice fishing the lake, not sure where one would stay. But during the summer G&S is a great place to stay. Most of the fisherman are up there to catch pike. Of course we target walleyes

Do you catch good numbers up there too or just a few big ones?
