I live down town Fargo, and last couple nights I fished near main ave bridge. Ice was sketchy and I missed a couple and had one on. Why don't u ever c anybody fishing the red around town and u think down town is worth fishing??

The ice is super sketchy from the dams and bridges downtown, that's why no one is fishing there.

Yeah fishing near bridges isn't a good idea. If it were a popular thing to ice fish the Red in Fargo I'm betting people would go through every year. It's far from safe.

Cats are extremely lethargic in cold water. Walleyes maybe but no idea really. It's just something to keep in mind, saying there is plenty of ice around bridges in Fargo could persuade someone not experienced to go out on the river. It's a very dangerous thing. I would never ice fish the Red without someone who is very familiar with it. Just my 2 cents.

The red is a finicky B. I've had days that are great for eyes and days you won't get a bite. The last time I fished the river. There was 3 feet of ice and the fishing was great. Came back the next day on the ice was broke up and moving. Be careful.

I usually stop ice fishing the red by the end of January. The ice conditions change rapidly in February that I don't trust it. Especially this year with rain and warm temps in January. I have not been on the red in over 3 weeks and don't foresee anymore this year.

Going to be giving the red a try this week before the weather turns brutally cold again. Fished it a few years ago through the ice and managed a few small eyes. Anyone have success tipup fishing with suckers or larger bait in shallow? Will probably attach some weight and have a lindy type setup. Thinking 4-6 fow

Slower current areas out of the main channel are where you want to set up for eyes. Inside/outside bends, confluences, behind a jam, etc. Also, your best bet is from about an hour before dark and an hour after dark. Daytime fishing tends to be very slow. Never did much early morning either but you never know. If you are going to fish the Red through the ice, you should commit to 3 outings. One of the three will probably be ok to good. The other 2 will probably be crappy. I probably have 60-70 outings under my belt. I've caught my limit about 5 times. But, you can tie into some doozies. I don't go there for numbers, just for one big bite. Never hurts to throw out tipups, but jigging something that glows and makes racket tipped with some meat is the top producer.

Life jacket would be a must if I was ever going to fish that river, and with the current that may not even help if there was an incident.
