I usually just get live minnows before I go and then the night before I leave, scoop them out of the water and put them in ziplock bags and pack them on ice. Keeping them on ice in a cooler won't freeze them and they stay fresh for 3-4 days.

Vacuum seal them alive and put in freezer. Lay them out nice in the bag and they seal up in nice flat frozen packs to put in the cooler.

Slightly off topic but it just popped into my head. I want to see what would happen if you chamber vac'd live minnows in water. Need to stop by guywhofishes house soon.

I'm guessing their own blood boiling in their body might be an issue.

Coke minnows. I put about 15-20 minnows in those little snack size ziplock bags and pour Coke (not diet) in. Just enough so that when I get the air out and lay it flat on a cookie sheet the minnows are covered and then freeze them. The coke doesnt freeze solid, more of a slush so it is easy to dig a couple out at a time so they all dont thaw and get mushy. Also, when dealing with all of those big fish up there for a few days your hands get knicked up and the salted minnows sting. Little pro tip I got from guywhofreezesminnowsincoke.

When we went to Canada where live minnows weren't allowed, I just super saturated water with salt and put the minnows in the brine over night. Too long and they look like minnow raisins, not long enough and you get mush. Then I put them onto cookie sheets and into the freezer. The frozen minnows were ziplocked and ready to fish. Once they thawed out you should use them that day. Refreezing didn't turn out too good for us, once they started to rehydrate a bit. I've done this with sucker minnows as well to use on tip ups. I was poor, so nothing went to waste when it came to fishing.

Never thought of bringing my own minnows up there, can get salted ones almost anywhere and live ones at a few different places. The frozen coke trick sounds like it would work pretty well.

I have also preserved minnows using coke. They seem to hold their color and are not mushy which is nice with barbless hooks.

you can buy "livies" up there for about 50 cents a minnow. and they do count them one by one.

1/4 cup pickling salt mixed with 1/4 cup sugar in a ziplock bag. Add one scoop of live minnows to bag and shake to coat all the minnows. Rub your hands on outside of bag to make sure minnows aren't totally stuck together and lay flat in your freezer. Pretty easy recipe and seems to work very well. Good luck!

Buying a couple cans of salty's is just easier, and not much more expensive. When you pick up your license just grab some.

I could make my own bread too, but someone already has and put it on the shelf in the grocery store, they even slice it for you...
