Just seeing what the feedback is on Seekins rifles. I plan on purchasing a "long range" rifle in 2026. Looking at the 7PRC or the 300 WM. Thinking to scope it with a Leopold VX5 HD. I will be hunting elk, deer , etc.... every insight is appreciated!

Budget is no more than $4k...ive been saving for three years to purchase my one and only specialty rifle

I would get one built to the specs you want.

Heard good things about the seekins I would be going a fast twist 6mm variant as practice is what makes some one good at shooting

I agree with custom built, you get exactly what you want. I have had eight rifles built in the last 10 yrs. And the 6.5 x 284 always is the go to rifle.

What are you shooting now? I put SIGNIFICANT value on a low-recoil and inexpensive to shoot rifle that closely mirrors your “long-range” package.

Heee’s what I mean. I have a .223 shooting 62gn ELD-Vt’s w/.395 BC @ 3K FPS. My M70 FWT’s Shoot 140gn TSX’s W/BC of .404 @ 3030 FPS. Their trajectories are so doggone close that I can learn a TON about what the wind is going to do. I can especially learn how far is “too far” in a given wind speed. I can shoot the 223 for ~1/3 or less what the 270’s cost.

Just something to consider if “long range” is what you’re really working towards. The more you can shoot, especially without having to worry about recoil and getting more shots/$$.”, the faster you’ll learn and the better your form will ultimately be.

I have a seekins and love it. But I do agree if you are willing to spend that amount of money look into building one. There is alot of good actions and prefit barrels that will deliver as good if not better than some factory rifles.

Seekins rifles are awesome. I have an SP10 AR10 in 6MM Creedmoor that is a serious tack driver, especially for an AR platform rifle. Had one issue with it and they sent me a return mailing label, fixed it, and had it back to me in a week. Custom is great if you definitely trust the person doing the work but I don't think it'll be any greater value than the Seekins. I think you are on the right track with the
7 PRC for an all around cartridge for the size game you are talking.

Coming from a guy that use to think bigger was better, research some other calibers. I use to love my 7mm Rem. Mag, not any more. I began shooting the 6.5 PRC a few years ago and couldn't be happier. Never going back down the magnum route again. The lack of recoil and better ballistics from my 6.5 PRC trumps everything I thought I had in a magnum. The 156 EOL Berger in my PRC vs. the 168 VLD out of the 7mm, produces 150 fps and 130 more ft. lbs of energy at 500 yards. I will echo what SDMF is preaching, lower recoil will make it easier to shoot long range and bullet placement will trump power in most instances.

Exactly. I went with the 6.5PRC for this reason.

Replace the 300 Win Mag and go 300 PRC would be my choice these days. If your willing to go 7PRC then 300PRC should be a good consideration.
If you want one of these types of calibers I say go for it. Just because some are using .224 and .243 bullets to kill things like elf and giraffe doesn't mean everyone has to.
I keep kicking around building a 35 Whelen, why I don't know aside from it is interesting to me, different from everyone else and there us kind of a history about it. For absolutely no reason at all I think a 375 Ruger would be fun.
Can you kill a whitetail with a fast .224 match bullet? Sure but I have zero desire to do it at this point of my life. I really do like the idea of similar rifle in a 223 or such for practice.

You do realize that you are basiclly shooting a magnum in a 6.5PRC right? Hornady just didn't put the word magnum in their PRC names. All the PRC's require a "Magnum" bolt face

Energy is a metric that means less than impact velocity and bullet construction by leaps and bounds.
I love how people use "energy" . Energy doesn't kill and really doesn't equate to anything really, maybe if there was a standard for how much energy it takes to expand a projectile then fine. But most bullets expansion are marketed by FPS fir a reason

Yep thats why people cant tell the difference in a wound channel from a 223 77tmk or a 220 grain 300 win mag. Energy is an old ron spoomer metric like wallop factor.

The 6.5PRC uses a magnum bolt face because of the parent cartridge. I prefer the short action of the 6.5 over the 7. Also, less recoil makes it more enjoyable to shoot.

I hope people aren't shooting elves. Those things are quite rare these days and have some serious archery skills.

Im shooting a Weatherby vanguard 300 WM now. What are the suggestions on building one? I am very "green" when it comes to rifle components and building a gun.

What are your goals. List them out and with all the people around here sure get something put together with a good smith to do the work

I'd start with looking what you have around for rifles.

Remington savage bergara tikka actions would all be good starting points to build off of if you have a donor sitting forgotten in the safe

If not id seriously look into howa or bergara barreled actions and assemble from there if they have a combo that you think will fit the bill.

If none of those options work you can buy custom actions that accept prefit barrels and peice it together fairly easily with a bit of leg work and research.

There is alot of aftermarket actions available as well as some of the above mentioned manufactures selling stripped actions for a starting point
