The Bob Maki bindings are another great option and I guarantee there isn't a quicker and easier binding to get into. Also if you Google you can probably fund plans to make your own out of inner tube.

I can say the surplus shoes suck horribly on any hills or ice. But if you're a little bigger dude they work good to carry your ass over the snow.

That's why you need the GV ratchet bindings with the cleat. Here's some pics of mine:

Unless you're trying to walk up the side of a glacier, they work.

from researching it looks like msr has a pretty big following have you used any of there looking at the ascents,.

The MSR Lightning Ascents are awesome! I tried a pair a few weeks ago, and will be buying my own this week hopefully. The aluminum shoes can get a little noisy, but they will outlast anything homemade. I've got an older pair of Tubbs snowshoes that I'll part with for little to nothing if you're interested. Actually two pairs (mens and womens).

Here is another alternative that would work really well around here. Would also work well in the backcountry when terrain isn't too nasty.

Wow, if you did that in an hour, you are a crafty craftsman indeed.
I predict you are not going to enjoy those bindings and they may not be as durable as you expect, but still pretty cool.
