I'm looking at installing one on my Yamaha 8hp kicker. I've been reading on each and I have a friend with a trollmaster but I'm really leaning toward the iTroll. It has a "hunt" mode feature, step up, step down, and many other features that would be good for trolling crankbaits both along structure and open water (go to lake of the woods a few times a year). I also think it would be good when trolling for Salmon on Sak as well.

Anyone have any experience with the iTroll or why you chose trollmaster over iTroll?

I have had 2 Trollmasters and then 1 I-Troll. I am going back to Trollmaster this year. My issue last summer could have been motor related; but there was too much speed/throttle surging when not in hunt mode using the I-Troll. The I-Troll is easier to replace parts if necessary (cord is separate from the head unit and the servo); but my experience has me going back to Trollmaster.

Did you fund hunt mode to be useful or more of an hassle?

My current boat came with ITroll installed. I haven't activated "Hunt" because I don't troll very often at all. That said, it's been flawless the little I've used it in the 3 seasons I've owned my current boat.

I had a trollmaster on both a Mercury 9.9 and on my current Yamaha 9.9 overall the pro 2 performed great over the 12 years on 2 boats. Heard a lot of good things about I-Troll also the hunt mode is a plus. I just dont have a use for it. What ever one you choice you will never go without one that how good they are. Also a lot of video and information out their and here to help you make your choice. Good Luck!

Not to derail, and maybe it adds to the conversation..but my control unit seemed to have crapped out on my trollmaster pro 2 last summer.

Is there anyone who can work on these in the state? Or are they simple to take apart work on? Clean contacts? Best to just replace?

The screen just turns on and shows jibberish. No function. Anyone experienced this before?

I will say, that the trollmaster worked great when it worked the previous two summers.

If the screen shows multiple squares in a row disconnect power leave off 2 minutes, connect power and reboot control.

Thanks Dragon.

I pulled the batteries this winter so we will see if its fixed come spring. In years past I had the batteries powered up year round because it was in a heated garage. Hopefully this fixes it. If I remember right it might have shown squares. Thanks!

ndlongshot when you connect the power and if the squares show again disconnect power and reboot again happens whenever i disconnect my power source in the late fall for winter storage might take a couple of tries to get it right. GOOD LUCK.

Sawyer,
Every time my trollmaster remote got wet it was toast. I’m switching to I troll this year.

When you order it have Joel take the surge out. For some reason when you make a throttle change with the Itroll, Joel made a surge in the setting.

Gets old really fast as much as I change speed for pulling cranks in and out of current on the river.

I have ran Itroll for 4 years and I have had a couple problems but Joel fixed everything. I have never used hunt mode.
