tying up your boat

I'm amazed and sometimes amused at boat slips and private docks all the different ropes and knots and sometimes knots on top of knots on top of knots that people use to tie up a boat. Had a pontoon break loose and rub against my boat and the guys from Wisconsin had a ball of knots so big that I finally cut the rope completely off and started new rather than deal with their mess. I like a slip knot with good rope that it will come out easy, What's your favorite boat knot ?

a few half hitches seem to work, easy to tie and untie

Assuming the dock has cleats, I use a double overhand knot and put the loop under the cleat and then one side of the loop over each end of the cleat and yank tight. For poles I just feed the line through the loop made from the double overhand knot and then over the top of the pole. I put about 4-6 bumper buoys between the dock and boat as well. Never had one slip off a cleat or pole no matter how rough it got. If I need to tie up for longer than overnight, I put the boat back on the trailer and tarp it.

I've used those cleat methods a long time - guess I do know a knot or two.

For some reason I hadn't thought of them as "knots".
