That said, there is a beginning and end to the fishing license period, and that occurs April 1, as it does for hunting and trapping licenses as well. So, if you want to fish starting April 1, you need to get that new 2018-19 license.

Another benchmark for April 1 this year is that a new fishing proclamation goes into effect. North Dakota’s fishing regulations cover a two-year period, so this year’s changes apply through March 31, 2020.


Here’s a few highlights from this year’s changes.

• The season for taking of nongame fish with a bow will now be open year-round.

• The beginning of the darkhouse spearfishing season changes from Dec. 1 to whenever ice-up occurs. The closing date of March 15 will remain in place.



So with the changes to the bow fishing season and it now being open year round does that allow us to use a bow fishing setup while darkhouse spearing for Northern in the winter months?? I for one would think that would be a different challenge and new kind of fun in regards to darkhouse spearing.


Upon farther review on the game and fish website I don't believe that it would be legal to take northerns with a bow while darkhouse fishing

It's never legal to take a northern with a bow, only non-game fish. You can underwater spearfish them though, which would be fun

Strange you can underwater spear fish game fish but not above water. Seems kinda hypocritical, as long as you follow daily limits...

Underwater spearers are using a spear gun with propulsion almost exclusively. Either with rubber bands (my guns) or with air compression. I never speared a fish with a pole stick (I have 2) in 20 years of diving. I think that the only places that you can dive and spear fish in ND are DL and Sak ... just going on memory. Would like to try on Metigoshe but not allowed.
