last fall I had neighborhood kids catch me a bunch of small frogs. I took them fishing. They out-fished my other baits including live....3-1.

Frogs used to be dynamite on the Sheyenne from Aug to whenever I quite fishing in the fall for catfish and walleye for me. Need to get a new frog net and get back into that.
Target walleye has had a couple articles on fall frog bites lately.

Didn't notice any frogs, but it surprised me today to find a egg sack in a walleye today. Won't lie this is the latest I have been out in the boat in years!

Lots of walleyes with eggs in the fall. Wouldn't surprise me if a state record came in the fall either.

Would this work in the tailrace?
I've never tried it. I wouldn't try it in current from shore. I think it should work off the blocks: Seems to me the key is the bulk...Also, anywhere in the vicinity of the 'race I'd use a football head.

Yup leopard frogs in the fall = big walleyes up shallow.

Another great big walleye bait mid summer,"salamander's" fishing deep dormant neutral walleyes over deep structure.
Bait shops in central mn sold live frogs, salamander's and crayfish for bait not sure what changed as bait shops strictly minnows ,leeches and crawlers these days, some new mn law passed im sure making sales of these critters illegal in mn.

I've shared this here before, but Dad and I were driving from Fargo to Devil's Lake when we rounded a curve between swamps and there were TONS of salamanders on the road. I told him to pull over and we filled a minnow bucket with them. He was skeptical - I out fished him 3-1 and had him on size by a good amount. I was catching 20+, he was catching dinks. He finally gave in and we finished off a two man limit of 20"+ fish. Proud day for me teaching him a new technique.

How do you fish them? Through the lips and let them swim around? Off the bottom? Egg weight?

When lake fishing I've trolled them hooked through the lips with a stinger between their back legs. In a river I've just used a circle hook through the lips and a no-roll sinker on the bottom.

From years past i have a handful of weighted 00 short shaft hooks with a weedless wire, hook em thru the lips,no stinger but good idea.
