I talked to a legislator I know when the fighting Sioux debate was taking place a few years ago. She had no opinion one way or the other on the nickname. For weeks during legislative session she had natives from all over the state visiting her and pleading to do something so they don't take away the nickname. Natives in favor of the nickname outnumbered those against by 10-1. She was overwhelmed and became a staunch supporter of the fighting Sioux because it was such a personal issue to all the natives.
