This is complete rubbish.

Generally speaking, the walleyes on sakakawea are harder to catch, less populated, overall smaller in size, and not near as well tasting thanks to oilfield pollution. My advise is to stay waaaay away. Devils lake is the go-to slam dunk place to fish in nd.

Edit: After reading this thread a little more.... I think I was tricked and missed the sarcasm. :;:sorry

I think I told this story once before, but here goes. Had some buddies claim they could tell walleyes from Sak apart from walleyes from DL and Canada and MN. I just so happened to have walleye from each of those locations so I challenged them to try to figure out which was which. I fried 4 platters of fish and labeled the bottom of the plate with Can, Sak, MN, or DL and let the game begin. When it was all done they got 2 of the 4 to match what was on the bottom, but the funny part is that there wasn't a walleye on the table. I fed them all redhorse suckers that I caught out of the Sheyenne river in the spring. They, to this day, don't know the fish wasn't walleye and they still rave about how good of a fish fry that was. IMO, walleye is walleye and it's the guy doing the fish cleaning, the storage method, and the cook that makes the real difference. Not so much the location where the fish was caught. Carry On!!

I find fish caught during drought years have a subtle, enhanced, sublime fish flavor, pretty sure it is due to the higher evaporation rate concentrating all that goodness, at least that is what some oldtimers told me once.

My Grandma was telling me a story the other day how they used to go out on the frozen Heart river every year and have a party. They would burn there old Christamas tree's and have a fish fry. One year my Grandpa's friend cooked up a bunch of carp to see if anyone would know the difference. Grandma said nobody could tell. She still acts like he could have killed them all with food poisoning or somthing. She'll eat her walleye and that's it.

I do think water quality has some effect on fish taste. In college by Brookings SD, we caught a mess of Northern one day. The lake was shallow and had had 100,000 geese on it for a few weeks that spring. You could see goose shit in the water and it was stained yellow, and even smelled. The fillets were yellow. I let my roommate take em all, he was happy..smh.

I've always thought fish taste better in the spring when they have lost their teeth, ya know, before their new ones grow in.

I'll agree with that. One of my favorite things to do during low water years is to walk around the shores and pick up walleye tooth sheds.

Now the new debate is over pronghorns, I guess the sage brush in Wyoming give the pronghorns meat a bitter taste so the pronghorns in north dakota taste better.
