One of my autumn blaze trees this morning. Half normal half jacked . Tree is five years old. My other two look just fine. Should be able to find this iron supplement at tractor supply?

I try to throw a hand full of ironite around all my evergreen trees in the spring. Would that help in this case?

Acidifying the soil will help. However, this will be short lived and likely needed every/everyother year. Elemental sulfur is the recommended amendment to acidifying the soil. A paper done by Iowa State concluded that to effectively acidify the soil (0-6in depth) if there is a calcium carbonate equivalence of 1.5%, it'll take 68 tons of sulfuric acid to dissolve all the limestone. Can it be done? Yes, it's up to you on how you do it and how much money you want to spend. Keep in mind, everytime an acid reacts with a base, a salt will precipitate out and that can also be tough on plants.
Here's a link to a Clemson Extensjon paper on soil acidification:
https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/changing-the-ph-of-your-soil/

Soil test so you know what's going on before you try something. It'll run you $30, but you'll k kw what's going on. If it were me, I'd test the bad areas and if there are good areas, I'd test those to in order to compare and help with a game plan.

Your local NDSU Extension Agent should have soil sample bags on hand.

my amur maples look really good this year. they really took off and grew about 3-4 feet this year. located north Mandan. the only thing I noticed this year is that they are turning red a lot earlier then last year. Two of them already have red in them.

too wet ;:;rofl

A remote possibility. I’ll shut the water off for few days and see what happens. It was only getting one cycle or 20 minutes each morning. It’s been dry out here for a good while now. The grass seems to love itThumbs Up

I got ya. I’m always guessing on all of the unfortunate plants in my yard. A few survive my evil ways, most don’t

I'm sure it's more to do with stress but still sad to see the signs of fall coming with how late our spring was.

lots of unhappy trees due to heat stress in FM area

then again, might be the gobs of political ads in the airwaves rather than heat stress

I know they are adversely affecting me

Mine do that every August if it gets too hot and too dry. A root watered and some fertilizer in it turns it around if I get to it earlier enough. If too little and too late like I did this year (screwed up didn’t notice it) lots of root watering saves the tree. Alkaline soil likely worsens it.

This one's likely more of a case of too much water not to mention a fair chunk of old Beaver damage.
