First part of season 5, eight episodes, started November of 2022 and ended as what they called a mid-season break January 2023. The beginning of this episode was not how the show ends. They flashed back and forward, The next 5 episodes will be them figuring out who all was involved in staging the death, and destroying them. It could be Montana to Texas mayhem, with all the Dutton's friends helping out. Epic...finally. Seven years to air 53 episodes. Between covid, the actors/writers strike and the shows huge egos, they came really really close to wrecking a good show.

Never would have thought they would get rid of John so fast but I guess that fits the plot for the rest of the series.
I think this was Taylor Sheridans way of telling Kevin Costner “FU” and slamming the door on him. Will be interesting to see how the show moves on without Costner but I think Kayce and Rip will move into more a main character role, which we’ve seen both grow into the last few seasons.

Remember, Costner wanted out so he would have the time to go do his own thing. I am thinking he came back to do the one episode under duress, or as a favor to the rest of the cast so they would stay employed.

They never even actually showed Costner in the episode. Just a body on the floor. The rest of the episode was flashbacks to the other characters in the weeks leading up to the “suicide”

Ahh, that was probably the way they didn't want this to work out.

FWIW, I have yet to watch it.

Yeah, I knew I was running that risk when I recorded it and chose to do something else other than sit through far too much advertising. I rarely watch anything now as its being aired for the first time. Instead, I record it so I can fast forward through the effing commercials.

And, while a person didn't know for sure they were going to bump off John, it was in the tea leaves. I just didn't know if it would be in the first or ?? episode.

I won’t spoil anymore of it for you but you won’t have to sit very long to find out some of the main critical points of the plot.
