Ah heck, all this tapping ,boiling etc....mine comes in a brown jug with a pic of a black lady "aunt jimema" well used to be now the woke crowd removed said black lady.

Truth be told, just about every "mom n pop" type shop, orchards etc has home made maple syrup all through central and northern mintuckle come spring, even gas stations

smoking fillet salmon/trout,brushing maple syrup at the end of smoke is a wonderful finish.

I eat a breakfast that requires syrup no more than once a year. Because of this I will not be creating my own sweet empire.

Is anyone else anxious to tap some trees this year.. I am patiently waiting for a lil warm up to put some taps in..
At what temps do you guys start tapping the maple trees?

temps above freezing during day, below freezing at night

your tree will tell you - they’ll start crying at broken branches, weak points in the bark, etc.

don’t forget to sterilize your drill bit and taps

It turns out I have three big maples in my yard... ha ha. Der. I tapped three maples and two “Manitoba Maples”, i.e. box elders.

Two of the maples (sugar or hybrid?) and two box elders are flowing.

I read that boiling that much sap inside is expensive, humid, and can make walls sticky. So I built an evaporator for about $120. Ha ha.

How did you guys do this year ? First time for me and We had so much snow that I didn't get up to the trees until it was too late. I tapped 3 boxelder trees for the expierence of it and only got about a tablespoon from each tree in 24 hours. How much should a guy expect during the peak of the season ?

Was a horrible year for me in bismarck,, I usually get about 40-50 gallons of sap from my backyard maple the last five years but was lucky if i got 5 from it this year.. I think it warmed up to fast this spring

We tapped two maples. Started maybe a week late. But freeze/thaw cycle kept going for a week or so and we got maybe 35 gallons of sap which yielded 1.5 gallons of syrup. For some goofy reason our maples are very high brix.

That's real cool Guy. Are there black walnut trees in ND? Recently found out these can be also tapped.

No idea if they’re here. I know they’re in southern MN but that’s banana belt compared to this ice hole.

Lincoln, kinda...
I have a relatively small black walnut, so they will survive in ND. Even after they were accidentally mowed a few times. Mine is located on the edge of my pond. Probably way wetter ground than I would have expected to find one.
