So I have a 1999 18.5' lund sitting on a very rusty trailer. Looking to replace the trailer and thinking of going galvanized. for a new shorelander bunk it is 2600 for painted and 3000 for gal. would you spend the extra money??? Gal doesnt look as pretty but I dont care on a 16 year old boat.

I have a Lund sitting on a galvanized trailer. It's a 2004 model, not a speck of rust. The galvanized gets a little tarnished over the years, but really has held up damn well for me.

Let's put it this way, until they start making the trailers out of stainless steel, I would spend the extra couple of dollars to get galvanized. I have had to replace the spindles and hubs as they were pretty wore out (seals no longer held water out due to grooves in the spindles), but the frame is going nowhere.

I do need to replace the painted guide bunks. Wish they would have been galvanized as well.

I agree with Allen that it's worth the extra $$... but for a 1999 boat? hmmm...

Painted trailers usually last about 10 years before they start to show even a little rust here/there.

If stored inside then I'd go painted. Unless you fish winters when there's salty roads.

Mine's 11 yrs old and it has barely a hint of rust in a few cracks/crevices/joints (Shorelad'r)

I'd spend the $400 in a second, especially if you pull on any gravel regularly.

I do have 2 miles of gravel before I get to the highway.

I am only planning on keeping this boat another 3 years or so so not sure if the extra 400 is worth it. Not sure I would recover any of that when time to sell.

If I was going to keep this boat for a long time I would go gal for sure.

I just replaced the trailer for my 2000 Lund 17' angler. I found a used one that was about a year old that looked new(I assume boat got wrecked) for about $700-800 less than a new one. Mine was a roller trailer so a new painted one was about $3000 with a spare tire and a carrier.

Ive been looking online for a used one and found a couple for a 17' but didnt think it would work for my 1850 tyee. kinda in a hurry to buy since all my trips are 100+ miles one way and the old trailer is about shot. Tufte in northwood has the best price so far.

it's at the point of no return. rusted through in a few spots and hardly road worthy

2007 20 ft prov on a galvanized trailer. Looks like new other than the bunks where the boat rubs.

I am sticking with galvanized on all future boats if possible, always rust free.

2nd boat I had rust on the trailer, took boat off tore down trailer sand blasted it put primer on painted and two years later RUST. next boat bought galvanized trailer, my trailer is 19 years old no rust. I will buy the next boat with a galvanized trailer. I had the same problem with the hubs that allen had. replaced axle with a heavy axle cost was around 150.00 . with the heavier axle had to reliegn the tires this year wear was on the outside tread that was over 10 years ago.

Galvanized; two words come to mind, ugly and no rust. Had her for 14 years under a 17 foot boat. Nearly looked like the day it was new when I sold it. I would buy another i'd guess, depending what is setting on top of it.

well, not sure I will be buying a new one right now as I am just finishing up an expensive building project. Will keep looking for a used one. If anybody hears of a trailer in decent shape that an 1850 tyee will fit on let me know.
