Jigs and minnows have probably caught more spring walleye than any other presentation in the Midwest. Early in the year, we often find six pound mono to be deadly when using jigs and minnows and often prefer mono over braid because of the limpness and stretch. Sluggish fish can pick up the minnows and hold the minnows longer without feeling anything wrong. When we are not dealing with a lot of snags, we have replaced the traditional lead jig with tungsten.
The Northland Tackle Tungsten Stand Up Jig is a pure grade tungsten that is much smaller in profile compared to traditional lead. This smaller profile cuts current better but is also much harder than lead which greatly enhances the sensitivity when using mono. You can feel the differences between bottom contact and fish much easier when using mono. Dragging jigs and minnows in the spring continues to be deadly for walleye.
