Hello Nodak Angler forum,

As you guys can see from the title I am in need of a little help making a decision on the right knife. It's my father's birthday coming up in a month and he has invited me to go fishing with him. To be honest I don't go as much as I should so I was more than happy to say yes. While fishing on his birthday, I want to present him with a nice knife that he can keep and use every time he goes out fishing. This is where I am needing help. What knife would be best for fishing in general? I have seen some nice knives here http://www.used.forsale/canada/custom-knife I would also like to get the knife engraved with his name and a small sentence, how would I go about that?

A little about my father. He loves river fishing! When he arrives at his destination he sets up camp and gets the fire going then the rods come out and the fun starts. He's been fishing for a long old time, a lot longer than I've been around anyway. He's a managing railway engineer not far retirement and is looking forward to spending more time fishing.

As of budget and things like that I am pretty easy and open to all kinds of ideas and offers. Really looking forward to speaking with you all.

Thanks

Maybe something like this below

That's a cool knife but maybe not the most practical. What does he have for a fillet knife?

Yeah, go to Scheels and see what they have for high end filet knives. Then take said knife to a trophy shop and have them engrave whatever you want on it.

Are you looking to get him fillet knife or more of an all-purpose camping knife? That could make a big difference in which direction you go.

a nice folding pocket knife with a clip is darn handy too and not for just fishing so don't rule that out either

A Leatherman Wave is a good all-round choice as a knife/campers tool,I carry mine daily and would be lost without it,I also carry a Kershaw Blackout,a great pocket clip knife. Not a big fan of serrated blades on pocket knifes.

I carry a sog spec-elite (my nice knife), a Kershaw (cheap, $25 Bargin bin), and a leatherman wave... for camping imo a good folder and a leatherman should always be in your pocket (don't go Gerber on the multitool, not the same class of quality)

The leatherman oht (one hand tool) is on my list of wants I'm sure that engraved would be a pleaser

If you want a truly good knife and to have it custom, call Dennis Fitter at DDGF cutlery. He works out of his home ( I believe in Mandan), but makes all of his knives by hand. He will also engrave anything you want and make a custom sheath. He has all sorts of blade lengths, shapes etc. Yes, he even makes fillet knives. I have a few of his knives for both hunting and fishing, and they are some of the best knives I have ever seen and they look good too. Would be a good option if you want something different than what you can find at a retail store.

For a gift, this sounds like the best idea. Something that can't be bought at any old store. Sometimes the custom stuff isn't at the tip-top quality that you'd see at a high-end store bought knife, however, if it's a custom one-off, it has more value. Even if the value is sentimental. I know my dad would rather have something that I searched for, and put some effort into, rather than a more expensive store-bought item.

This guy usually has a few custom knives from excellent makers generally at or near what they'd cost to order and wait 12-18mo from the maker.

http://www.vcmcustomknives.com

I've purchased at least 3 from him and find him trustworthy. Mail a money order and he ships the knife the day the $$ arrives.

Are you going to cut him? haha, just kidding. I have used the basic $15.00 knife for most of my life with tremendous luck.

Those leech lake knifes are awesome, but the $100+ price tag is a bit much for a cheap bastard like me.
